This remarkable black-and-white photograph from 1968 captures one of the most extraordinary and well-documented Marian apparitions in modern history
For nearly three years, starting on April 2, 1968, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared publicly over the dome of St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Zeitoun, Cairo, Egypt.
The luminous figure of Our Lady, often seen standing, bowing, blessing the crowds, or holding the Child Jesus, shone brightly against the night sky, drawing hundreds of thousands of witnesses from all faiths, including Muslims, Christians, and government officials.
What makes this event so profound is its public nature and unifying power: People gathered in peace, many reporting miraculous healings and a deep sense of God’s presence.
The Coptic Orthodox Church, under Pope Kyrillos VI, officially recognized the apparitions shortly after they began following a thorough investigation. Even secular authorities could find no natural explanation.
This image stands as a powerful reminder of Mary’s maternal love reaching across divides and bringing light into darkness. “My soul magnifies the Lord!” (Luke 1:46) May it deepen our devotion to the Mother of God, who intercedes for us all.
