In my early sobriety I had a difficult time accepting the idea that I was never going to drink again. It's overwhelming to think about it. I was 22. Also it was the 80s and alcohol was everywhere and I was still in college where animal house was being lived daily and encouraged. 🤪 That is also one of the reasons many people have issues with the 12 step approach to sobriety. They don't like the idea of focusing on the program every day for the rest of their lives. People might say things like: “I don’t see how focusing on just today helps. I need a long-term plan if I’m going to stay sober.” “Taking things one day at a time seems too simplistic. My problems are deeper than just what happens in a single day.” I get it. I was there too. But, do you have some magical powers that allow you to live in the future and the present simultaneously? Sober or drinking you can only live in the present. If you're living in the future you are not living in reality. Every successful person I know has plans and goals in life. What do we really have control over? We can only control our actions and reactions in the present moment. That's it. That's all. We control our actions as they happen every day. My goal is to never drink again. I do it one day at a time. I created a daily habit and lifestyle that does not involve alcohol or drugs. I don't think about it at all. It's not a thing that bothers me. It really has not for 30 years. I have long term goals and plans. I work towards them every day and focus on what I can accomplish to meet those goals. To me, It's all about developing a process and building on that experience and adjusting the process and my mindset. Progress not perfection. I experience challenges and setbacks. We all do. I'm not a saint. 😇 But I do it sober. Without sobriety I don't have a chance. Sobriety has become my default setting and it's difficult to change that code. There are too many things that are in my life that keep me going on the correct path. Lots of antivirus software that is embedded in my circle of friends and family. ⭕️ I have developed a manner of living that strives for rigorous honesty. The promises the big book made have come true in my life. They can come true for you too. You just have to get up each day and do the next right thing. Just because AA 12 steps are my framework for success that doesn't mean I don't use other tools that complement the 12 step program. I use the "Four Agreements" as my daily guide. They align perfectly with the AA program. That's my experience, strength and hope for you. See you on the road. I'm the greying ginger dude trudging along. 🇮🇪🍀
