We’re now talking energy at the Delphi Forum. Interesting comment from my predecessor as U.K. Energy Minister, @charles_hendry COVID led to a fall in oil demand of 8m barrels a day. Straits of Hormuz leading to a fall in supply of 11m barrels. Big impact!

Loss of demand for oil during COVID: 8 mln barrels/day. Loss of supply today through Strait of Hormuz: 11 mln barrels/day. We are nowhere near ready for what’s to come - @charles_hendry at the @DelphiEconForum this morning.

Congratulations @MagyarPeterMP on your election victory. This is an historic moment, not only for Hungary, but for European democracy. I look forward to working with you for the security and prosperity of both our countries.

It’s not about how much gas we might need to use in the future, but about ensuring as much of the gas we do use comes from our own resources. The PM should use this week’s financial statement to change tack

Delighted to be one of eight former Energy Ministers (Labour, Conservative and SNP) who have written to the PM calling for a rethink on the North Sea. Madness to close down our own resources prematurely and rely more on imports. ft.com/content/2d1867…

This is a brilliant and crucial initiative, led by two of our most successful election winners @RuthDavidsonPC and @andy4wm who have shown in their own successes that the Conservative Party is at its most effective when it appeals to a broad range of voters.
Ruth Davidson@RuthDavidsonPC

The Conservatives only win when we're a broad church. We want to speak to those who feel politically homeless and to work with them - and business - to develop practical, pragmatic policies to improve lives & opportunities.

Exactly this. To win enough seats to form a Government, the Conservative Party needs to win back voters who went to Reform and to the Lib Dems, so it has to be a broad church.

This @FT editorial is spot on about where the Conservative Party should position itself post Jenrick's defection ft.com/content/e1b4e6…

The language of ‘Britain is Broken’ is taken straight from the SNP playbook…people who want to paint a picture of a broken country so they can pitch their snake oil solution of separation as the only better future. Britain isn’t broken. But it can be a helluva lot better.

Not scrapping the Energy Profits Levy is a strong contender for the worst decision in the Budget. Tens of thousands of jobs and billions in taxes and investment. All lost.

I don’t see how Labour can go into the Scottish elections on this platform. Policies which are too complex to explain on the doorstep and the only major Party hostile to Scotland’s oil and gas industry. It’s not just a NE Scotland issue. It resonates across the whole country.

Oh God it gets worse! Apparently the ban on new licenses “Shows the world you can take bold steps to move away from fossil fuel production.” 🤦‍♂️ We. Are. Importing. More. Gas. From. Overseas. Than. Ever. Before. 🫠🤪

Britain has become the most expensive place on Earth to construct a nuclear power station. If plans to build SMRs in Anglesey are to succeed, we need to tackle the root causes of that cost explosion. My latest for @SpecCoffeeHouse spectator.co.uk/article/its-a-…

Britain has the second-highest tidal range on the planet, behind Canada. And yet we make use of nearly none of it. If we seriously invest in tidal power, then we can create jobs, generate clean and cheap energy, and slash bills. My message to the Government 👇

Alan will be a great addition to the DESNZ team. He understands the energy sector incredibly well. He has engaged thoughtfully and constructively across the sector for years - and he is a very decent human being. A very good appointment.
Ed Miliband@Ed_Miliband

Delighted to have Alan join the team at @energygovuk. Having worked with Alan in the past, I know he will bring a wealth of experience to the Department, which will be invaluable as we continue to deliver on our clean power mission.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the only way Scotland could become an independent nation is if it learns from the likes of Ireland and Singapore. We need to attract wealth creators and get the tax TAKE up, not the tax RATE up.

I find it vaguely amusing that because I question some policies I’m told I’m not a real Conservative, having been a Party Member for 50 years and supported/campaigned for every leader since then, even when the Party was unpopular. Often by people who weren’t born when I joined!

One of the lessons from history is that broad church parties win elections. Ask Thatcher, Reagan, Clinton, Blair and Cameron. Parties which insist on ideological purity eventually become narrow sects, and are destined to lose, over and over again. Conservatives be warned.
