even Lilith, who loves to mix & mingle with human visitors, will sometimes lash out with an abrupt hiss & clawing, as if some nerve has been provoked, or some neuron firing: defend yourself! a moment later, the alarm has passed. (truly--it isn't personal. it is instinctive & involuntary as a sneeze.)

I knew it! look at those fangs. it is interesting how a cat-person can sense that a (real) cat is about to hiss & claw. naive visitors will pet a (seemingly) affectionate kitty not registering a sort of taut-nerve tension in the feline back, along the spine; but those (of us) more familiar with the peculiarities of cat neurology will sense it, & sensibly draw back.
