@zachtratar and tbf he is getting so much traction from piggy backing his post off their investment. Smart move but also clearly still helping him by being GC being interested in the first place. VC world lives on FOMO. He will have a check in days if not already.

Me during the first 30 seconds of this video: Bro this is how competition works. Grow up.
Me after 30s+: LOL this is actually hilarious and he kinda has a point. Still doesn't matter much, but fight on man... founder mode time.

General Catalyst just co-led a $31.5 million seed round into a blatant rip-off of my company, Kled. (skip to 40 seconds if you want to skip context) I would typically not speak on things like this, but this level of blatant copycatting is egregious and completely unacceptable, and needs to be made an example of. This is one of hundreds of YC startups who have conducted this disgusting behavior. Unimaginative slop that continues to get rewarded due to nepotism.

@zamdoteth You just know that guy is going to absolutely crush usage. No sleep needed = tokenmaxing!
English

@towheretobegin This is mostly true. But plenty of people get firstname @ in Series A still and that isn't founding.

@kylejeong Lurie really has done a good job cleaning up this city...

I just ran a search in the portfolio. Out of 170 current open jobs from Seed to Series D in NYC and SF, 89 have Senior, lead, staff, or principle in their job title. So 52%. But you are right that yoe is noisy and should not be an always thing. I agree with you too on the outcompeting part. It's why the Founding Eng title works so well for Seed stage. You can hire cracked folks right out of college, a mid career stud from a great company, OR an assassin with 12 years of exp who has seen everything you can possibly throw at them and the only thing that matters is the leveling behind the scenes.
English

@chasewoolard @larsencc ok fair enough, roughly how many offer senior/staff titles?
and do they correlate yoe as a prereq for them?
because that's the issue I have with these titles, they make yoe a prereq when it's noisy. I've seen people outcompete others with 6x more exp on paper

Basic rules of interview feedback.
1. If you interview someone over the phone or video - Give them an answer in <2 days.
2. If you interview them in person. Give them an answer in <5 days.
Stick to this and you will keep your candidates happy and your inbox cleaner from annoying feedback requests.

I’m Kashish. Just moved to SF from Madhya Pradesh, India via Nebraska.
I’m 22, the co-founder and CTO of TasksMind, and I ended up here because of an Instagram DM.
A friend I met during orientation messaged me about an idea. Honestly, the idea was questionable. But I replied anyway. We eventually pivoted into what TasksMind is now, and somehow that one message brought me from Nebraska to SF.
That DM changed my life.
A few things about me:
• I listen to music in five different languages on rotation. Bollywood, K-pop, C-pop, Thai pop, Western pop. Algorithm is confused.
• I alter my own clothes. Just finished crocheting a sweater for my boyfriend.
• I’m a CTO building AI agents, but my hot take: AI isn’t going to take over. Engineers won’t let it. We know how broken these systems actually are.
If you’re in SF and want to grab coffee, talk on-call infra, agents, fashion, or yell about how overhyped AI doom is, say hi.

@AntonHashTry @andruyeung No doubt. You can still work 6 days a week and 60 hours and have a life where you don't live every single day at the office. All you're doing is building hive mind at that point. You need to get outside influence on your brain sometimes.
English

@andruyeung Ah yes the classic 'we're changing the world' pitch that somehow requires you to have no life outside the office

I literally have 100 startups hiring in my portfolio. Tons offer senior and staff titles. It's not some. It's a bunch. I've also been internal and built engineering orgs from 0-75 engineers. You have to introduce leveling in some capacity even if small at Series A. Even the companies you see who don't use it in the JD are most certainly using it in their pay band leveling.
English

@chasewoolard @larsencc Some of them do have those roles but most don't based on what I've seen
English

@da_green_hermit @larsencc These titles 100 percent exist at startups. Thinking they don't is a founder/cult building MTS fairytale. You can get away with everyone being SWE at seed and some Series A, but not late A and beyond. And besides title, they absolutely exist for salary banding.
English

@chasewoolard @larsencc The senior and principal titles don't exist at most startups. Those are outdated categories for big companies to ineffectively correlate skill with yoe

@theleanover Everyone here just holds on until second summer hits in September and deals with the whiplash from warm to cold and grey every day. lol
