soderbergh's formal experimentation has often used consumer-level technology that seems underpowered for the job, suggesting that anyone (even without his skill/craft) can do this if they really want to, but AI is like the anti-DIY, and all the grosser given his resources

i am not one for forgiving the excesses of gen x, and understand how much more brutal the job market has become with each year, but acknowledging that you might be wasting your life at a job that primarily exists to degrade you and enrich board members is not one of their faults

a key point in the plot of office space is that the employees of initech have no stability, and are in fact perpetually on the chopping block because of the gutting of job protections and corporate profit-maxing that continues to make life hell for most americans every year

"AAAAAAAAAH GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT WITH A STABLE INCOME I'M LITERALLY IN HELL SAVE ME KURT COBAIN'S GHOST AAAAAAAH!" Why was Gen X like this?

honestly I was expecting one of these clowns to get killed, not try to kill someone, but either way it was all leading to something profoundly stupid and awful

people have been sniping at millennial tastes for weeks now but "this* kind of bullshit was one of the real plagues of the 2000s, ready player one: the band

@GoodWillsmith not trying to be mean i stg but it's almost heartening there's still the kind of nerd that would freak out over a guy who looks like he led an extremely bad "electronica" act, it's like a throwback to 2002 nerds

i’ve been observing the Mixtape discourse from a distance & it has all been so entertaining. when the hammer dropped that this is The Guy… i’m dead 💀💀💀💀💀 “loves David Lynch” oh shit should we throw a party ? should we invite Phillip Jeffries ?
Nuanced Film Takes@BadFilmTakes1

The lead developer of Mixtape is maybe the coolest dude I’ve seen in my life. He’s an actual rock star who loves David Lynch. A ball knower among ball knowers.

his closest analogue is probably dave sim (he even had an inscrutable religious mania phase), but for all the vile bilge that leaked into cerebus over its final 100 issues i don't remember unca dave openly giving hitler the big thumbs up (you do not gotta hand it to dave sim)

this nutjob remains a perfect synecdoche for the last 25 years of being online: started a kind of bro-y and nerd-ish webcomic, eventually became turbo-woke, seamlessly transitioned to terf-dom, then went full right-wing, and now apparently makes revisionist third reich fanfic

i feel like pirating marvel and d.c. comics (which, let's be real, is what the majority of the people using these sites were doing, they weren't logging on to read gary panter) is one of the few forms of piracy people shouldn't have moral qualms about
Brandon Wainerdi@ActuallyBrandon

Support your local comic shop. Support the artists and writers you pretend to be fans of. Support your local library. Support your local used book store. Whatever. But if you’re only reading comics illegally - you are not a comic fan. You are a leech.

the idea that irony that didn't exist on the internet before 2012 goes waaaaay beyond the usual generational narcissism. even leaving aside 2000s forum culture, sarcastic pricks were mercilessly roasting people for perceived corniness on fucking usenet and BBS
Aleph@woke8yearold

Prior to ~2012 American culture was earnest in a way that zoomers would find incomprehensible. No irony, no one cared about being cringe. They were totally cool with being le epic bacon chungus. The webcomic Ctrl Alt Delete represents this era to me

@Psychic_Driving it looks so good, i don't think you could actually approximate shirow's use of color (the pre-digital stuff) in animation (at least without spending a million dollars) but this is as close as they're likely to get

my only actual contribution to this pointless sniping will be: i never bought the accusation they didn't rock. that's not all they did, maybe not even what they mostly did, but brother james, pipeline, eric's trip, disappearer, even as late as rain on tin etc...these songs rock

thing about the sonic youth discourse is: they formed 45 years ago. they broke up 15 years ago. if you're under 30 you don't have to have strong opinions about this band. no more new albums. no more shows. you will rarely hear them in public. they have zero impact on your life.
