Meet ‘the Doctor,’ a centenarian chess hustler who turned 103 last December. He claims to have been born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, though that may be stretching things a little, considering the monarchy disappeared in 1918 😅
For decades, he has been one of the familiar faces at the chess tables in the southwest corner of Washington Square Park. He still plays every day, from mid-morning until late in the evening. ‘I am always up for a game, but I can’t play rapid chess,’ he says with disarming humility.
The chess world is full of characters so extraordinary that, if you encountered them in fiction, you would probably think the author had gone too far.

@FRosyrat96857 @ChessNetwork Builds an attack on b5.
Options are to defend directly (i think this fails in the end and the pawn dies) or to create counter play on the kingside. (To be fair, I’m not certain that succeeds either but that’s how i’d play this.

@checkmatetheday @ChessNetwork Why is Rb4 such a strong move?
English

@chesscoachandra 4B: Kxf2 Rh2+
5. Ke1
nope.
This is busted.
I did not solve this.
English

@chesscoachandra 1. … Qe4+
2. Kf1 Rh1+
3. Ng1
Our mating net has a hole in it…
What to do?
…. e2+!
4A: Qxe2 Rxg1+
5. Kxf2 Rg2+
6. Kf1 (or Ke1) Qxe2#
4B 🤣: does not exist. I forgot that my queen is guarding e2. Sooo Kxe2 is NOT a line.
Tactics are hard!

@Lordweb111 I don’t have a copy it’s a great book though. There’s also a chessable course.

@checkmatetheday Hi Daniel,You don't need to memorize lines, just understand the ideas behind the openings so you won't fall for opening traps,
Also please,Can I get a copy of chess structure if it's a soft copy?
English

In my opinion you should have ideas on the following opening;
1.Italian game
2.Spanish opening
3.Sicilian defense
4.Caro-kann
5.French defense
6.Queens Gambit
7. London system
8. Petrov defense
9. English opening
10. Scotch opening
General ABN@general_abn
Chess players, how many openings do you think a mid level player should focus on ?
English

@Eren_Jaeg3r @general_abn I must be missing something.
What about Qh6?
English

@general_abn If your opponent takes you get a free queen,if he doesn't,then mate in 2
English

@SusanPolgar Oooh
We use our extra pawn to reverse opposition!!
1. Ke2 Ke6 (long opp)
2. Kd3 Kd5
3. f4! Ke6
Now we control opposition
4. Kc4 Kd6
5. Kd4 Kc6
6. Kc5 (e5 is not available for opp)
…Ke7
7. Kd5 Kf6
8. Kd6 Kg6
9. Ke6 Kg7
10. Kxf5

English

I guess it’s true that when you have only moves, they are not terribly hard to find. 😊
Black to move and win from my Blitz game. 🤔
