Russia's reward for this? FIDE just voted to welcome Russian teams back. The vote was held in secret—"so federations who voted for it would not be called out," says Ukrainian player Angelika Valkova. @Vanessa_Kader It can be mutually exclusive, considering the fact that the parents (father) of russian child could be one responsible for taking the Ukrainian child’s life. Accepting russian athletes is not neutrality, it’s normalization of the crimes they are committing.

@chessborn One can be both saddened by the deaths of young Ukrainian girls and pleased that young Russian girls are taking an interest in chess. The two are not mutually exclusive. Understanding the world is not so binary, but complex. We must think in complex terms, not in binary terms.

I fully accept that FIDE is a democratic organisation and that whether or not we follow IOC recommendations or allow Russia to play, is a choice for the federations. No Western veto can exist. But the delegates cannot vote in secret, as they don't represent themselves, but their federations. In a tight secret vote, the incentives of those that want to reward delegates in going against the interests of the federation are increased and the decision simply cannot be taken seriously. When you break the rules to increase the chance of corruption, your actions are illegitimate. As is this decision.
