Mainly a @chesspublishing day! Meeting 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 c5 3 d5 Ne4 with 4 Nd2!? is visually shocking, but played of late by Alex Shabalov! Even after 4...Nxg5 5 h4 Ne6 (5...e5!?) 6 dxe6 dxe6 7 h5! White has definite comp, intending e3 and Qf3, then 0-0-0, Nh3-g5 or Bb5. #chess

Great to see my January @chesspublishing column is online! @ginger_gm makes crushing use of the h4 Tromp, @MagnusCarlsen deployed the Jobava London en route to his impressive double in Qatar, and we revisit last summer's British to see @stuthefox crash through in a Colle! #chess

Squeezing in a @chesspublishing column today! It had been thought diagram 1 was a draw, but now @stockfishchess likes White after 8 Nf3!? cxd4 9 Bd3!?. Who will be brave enough to test this? One for @gmmds maybe! Diagram 2, Sjugirov-Vlassov is just vast comp for two pawns. #chess

A long @chesspublishing day, but much of interest in the next column! Here's a Trompowsky line White should avoid - yes, Harry did go all the way to f2, @ginger_gm! - as well as the brutal 15...c5! from Hebden-Smirin at @london_chess. If 16 Nxc5? Nc6 or 16 Qxc5 Qa6!. Ouch. #chess

Mainly a @chesspublishing PM, with lots from #eccc2025, including the instructive Badelka-Tsolakidou. In the first diagram, Black needed to find 21...c5! to avoid drifting into big trouble. The second shows a variation where 30 Qa3! isn't novel, but is striking and strong! #chess

Latest d-pawn specials update finally finished for @chesspublishing! Lots of hard-fought games to enjoy. Not just Gukesh-Erdogmus, but Demchenko-Mamedyarov, also from #FIDEGrandSwiss, which saw a positionally critical exchange sacrifice then narrow escape for White! #chess

@richardpalliser @ginger_gm @chesspublishing Oh my goodness that’s like the Leela gambit against 1.b3: 1…e5 2.Bb2 Nc6 3.e3 e5 4.Bb5 Nge7!? Pretty strong too - I did a NIC article on it and I think @GMGawain has played it too! Never occurred to me in this line! Cool! 😊😊😊

This afternoon in Liverpool, @ginger_gm faces Steven Jones, who so impressed at the 2023 British in Leicester. Standing in for Simon at @chesspublishing, I've focussed on the Benko and English Defence, where 5 Nge2!? is a trendy modern gambit. It looks shocking, but works! #chess

Latest @chesspublishing column is up as I stand in for @ginger_gm! Instructive play from Nihal Sarin and @MagnusCarlsen, but I rather fancy that Simon will most enjoy the Dutch hack - sorry, meistering - that was Di Benedetto-Moussard! #chess

We learn about the 'Tang' gambit @penguingm1 (not the 'Hong' gambit Vlad...) and also the 'Noro' gambit (named after Yaacov Norowitz). Both crazy and fun lines for Black 🤠.

My latest article for @chesspublishing is out🙂 - chesspublishing.com/content/11/ind… This took quite some time! I have concentrated on early gambit lines for Black involving ...e5 against 1 d4. So: 1 d4 e5?! 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 Ne4 with ...d6!? as the quick follow up 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5

My March update for @chesspublishing Daring Defences is now up 👉 chesspublishing.com/content/11/ind…. I look at 4 games in the English Defence and 4 radical ways of playing against the Grunfeld. The 9 g4 novelty, as shown below, is a great idea that puts one opening variation into doubt.
