@pranesh One thing I haven’t been able to find, though, is why has the government decided to make these amendments? i.e. what or who was the driving force? It’s odd that there aren’t even conspiracy theories.

Going by the commentary I've seen on Twitter, many people clearly haven't read the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026. Here's a redlined version for easy reference: pranesh.in/temp/bare-acts…

Hope every lawyer in Delhi is fighting against the instinct to file overnight PIL in the Supreme Court about the Trans Bill.

the transgender amendment bill was introduced and passed in both houses of the parliament at a breakneck speed. allowed for no time to process, organise, protest (despite which much was done). idk much about the expected timelines in this case but this feels nefarious

eerie parallels between a bill that seems to criminalize allyship unfolding in real time, and a quiet, personal disillusionment with the very idea of allyship playing out alongside it

"My colleagues in the Jhargram college would relentlessly harass me. Some would want to sleep with me and then go around claiming that I desired them. The place was backward and terrible to live and work in. Surprisingly my tormentors were teachers, not villagers or students. My harassers belonged mostly to the educated, urban, middle classes. After my gender affirmative surgery, They started calling me “hijra.” I had to contend with what I would describe as buddhijibider sharajantra (a conspiracy) of intellectuals. I was harassed from the very beginning, but after my sex change operation, I became a special target of humiliation. My harassers would taunt me and say “Look at her, she is going around with a foreign body inside her.” After my surgery, I faced total social ostracisation. I had to stay in Jhargram. It was impossible to travel everyday from Kolkata. First, nobody would rent out accommodation to me. There were nights that I was forced to spend outside after returning home somewhat later than usual and finding the landlord has locked me out. That I was not murdered is truly a wonder." In this interview the senior journalist Monobina Gupta, Bandyopadhyay discusses her experience and the hardships she faces as a transgender person: caravanmagazine.in/vantage/my-har…

All this govt has ever done is bloat the judiciary with cases challenging its own unconstitutional, senseless acts.

With the trans bill set to become law, the only remaining hope seems to be the courts. But with the SC recently ruling that ppl from marginalized caste identities will lose their rightful constitutional protections if they choose to practice a non hindu religion, it feels like

As expected, the #Transgender Bill is listed for passing in #RajyaSabha today. Please note: 1. The Bill was passed in #LokSabha just y'day despite many MPs opposing & asking for it to be sent to a Committee for stakeholder consultations. 2. Y'day, #RajyaSabha was debating the Appropriation Bill and debate on that has been put on hold to take up Transgender Bill today. Y'day the debate on Finance Bill in Lok Sabha was also similarly put on hold to suddenly take up the Transgender Bill. This is extraordinary. This is done very very rarely & in fact, Govt always prioritises passing of financial bills over other business since these are time bound. 3. Govt has still not offered any explanation on what is the rush to pass this Bill. It brought the Bill suddenly without doing any prior consultations and has actively avoided sending it to #Parliament Committee also. It claims that the Bill is for the welfare of the Transgender community but refuses to engage with the same community on the Bill! Now MPs in #RajyaSabha have the option to move motions to send Bill to Select Committee. Hope MPs are preparing for that. Further hope that Opposition MPs will participate in vote on the Bill, and ask for division, instead of walking out! But Govt has the numbers, it will most likely be able to push the Bill through. And if so, it will add to a long list of instances where #Parliament will be reduced to a mere rubber stamp instead of a democratic platform for inclusive deliberations!

Govt has lost no time in transmitting the #Transgender Bill to #RajyaSabha, minutes after it was passed by #LokSabha. Govt will likely list it for discussion in RS tomorrow & push for it to be passed tomorrow itself. Amazing speed of passing Bills🫡

Its going to be a uphill battle but one that has to be fought. We cannot let this bil be passed by the Rajya Sabha. It too sickening and damaging a bill that sees trans people as essentially unnatural and suspect. Very very dark day this for India in n already dark age

The Transgender Rights Amendment Bill 2026 was passed in the Lok Sabha despite opposition demand to send the Bill to a select committee for further scrutiny.

Even if the Trans Bill becomes an Act if further passed in Rajya Sabha people can file multiple petitions against the Act, it goes strongly against what was upheld in the NALSA judgment, please do not lose hope yet

Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi@RahulGandhi·
The BJP government’s Transgender Persons Amendment Bill is a brazen attack on the Constitutional rights and identity of transgender people. This regressive bill: - strips transgender people of their ability to self identify, violating a Supreme Court judgement - wipes out the diverse cultural identities of communities across India - forces trans people to undergo dehumanizing examinations by a medical board - introduces criminal penalties and surveillance without safeguards The BJP government hasn’t consulted the trans community and brought a bill which stigmatises rather than protects them. The Constitution protects every Indian’s right to life, liberty, identity, and dignity. This BJP government is violating our Constitution and destroying India’s rich history of honouring transgender communities in pursuit of its narrow ideas. The Congress Party unequivocally opposes this Bill.

Everything frightening and stressful- work related, rights related, and even this online order related is crashing into me all at once, right now, in this very hour. I’ve never needed my friends, or even just a shoulder to lean on, as much as I do right now.
