Seyi Law Is Right. Nigeria Under Tinubu is Safer Today Than Ten Years Ago
The main issue with Nigerians is that we have short memories, so it is easier for politicians to take us for multiple rides. And that is what is going on now with paid influencers whipping up a frenzy about Oluwaseyitan Aletile's comments on the Honest Bunch podcast to the effect that Nigeria is safer today than it was ten years ago.
And it is interesting seeing some people getting carried away and talking from an emotional rather than a historical point of view.
Let me cast our minds back to 2016, which was ten years ago, and the years immediately following.
In 2016, the Niger Delta Militancy that had been resolved by President Umar Musa Yar'adua's amnesty program had resurfaced, and multiple groups were turning the region into a war zone.
One of those groups, the Niger Delta Avengers, had crippled Nigeria's oil industry by a series of bombings of strategic infrastructure, which reduced Nigeria's oil output to a ten-year low.
In 2015, Nigeria was producing 1.9 million barrels of oil daily. The very next year, our output was half that.
Not only were these groups killing soldiers and civilians in their bombing campaign, but they managed to reduce Nigeria's oil earnings from a high of $68.44 billion in 2011 to a paltry $17 billion by 2016.
And very few Nigerians outside the Southeast had even heard of the Indigenous People of Biafra or Nnamdi Kanu before 2016. I hadn't.
But because of the perceived shutting out of the Southeast of Nigeria from the government of General Buhari, especially after nobody from that region was appointed to lead any of Nigeria's twenty-two military, paramilitary and security agencies, and were not even included in the previous administration's borrowing plan, discontent grew in that region of the country.
Nigerians have forgotten that things grew so bad in the Southeast and South-South in 2016, that we had internal military operations codenamed Operation Python Dance and Operation Crocodile Smile.
In 2016, Nigeria experienced perhaps its highest incident of sea piracy as Niger Delta militants hijacked foreign-owned shipping a total of 36 times. In 2015, there were only 14.
Please fact-check me: Before 2016, both the Southeast and South-South were calm, and these operations did not exist. They became restive in 2016.
Today, both regions are calm. Piracy has ebbed and is almost nonexistent. Oil production is at a ten-year high. For the first time in over a decade, Nigeria overshot its OPEC quota in 2025 for three consecutive months and is set to do the same in 2026, producing an average of 1.71 million barrels per day.
Meanwhile, almost all of the over a hundred police stations that were closed down by the disturbances in the Southeast have been opened, even as Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, and his sidekick, Simon Ekpa, have both been convicted for terrorism and are in prison. At the same time, the Monday sit-at-homes have fizzled out, much to the chagrin of Peter Obi.
And then between December 2015 and January 2016, there was a brutal crackdown on Shia Muslims, with the result that officially we were informed that the Nigerian state killed 347 Shia men, women, children and infants.
Unofficially, we were told by Amnesty International that the death toll was over a thousand.
And thus began a war of attrition between Shiites and the Nigerian state that only ended with the election of President Bola Tinubu in 2023.
Before 2016, all we knew in Nigeria, by way of insecurity, was Boko Haram. It was in 2016 that two new and evil terms entered our lexicon: 'bandits' and 'Unknown Gunmen'.
All of a sudden, the Abuja-Kaduna road became the most dangerous road on Earth, with bandits kidnapping almost at will and the government doing almost nothing.
As that was going on, the Southern Kaduna Genocide was raging, with a serving Governor admitting to paying the killer herdsmen who were doing the killings.

One picture that I love.
I saw this picture posted by this Online Baseless Lawyer and Human Rice and Beans Cashtivist, Deji Adeyanju, yesterday, and I have not stopped loving it.
Na to even FRAME the picture remain like this.😂😂😂😂😂
The picture is that of a man who is diligent at his job.
A Lere Olayinka, who as a trained journalist, sees himself as a BLOODY REPORTER and will continue to function as such.
He is not living on the wealth of his wife and her family like the Online Baseless Lawyer. Rather, Lere Olayinka is doing his job and earning his living.
Abi una don see Online Baseless Lawyer handle any major case before? Who will even hire him to handle a major case self?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Imagine Peter Obi, a man who said King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall should be arrested and prosecuted after his altercation with air hostesses on a Value Jet flight, is now the same person saying Nnamdi Kanu should never have been arrested, talk more of being prosecuted and sentenced and that he should be given a negotiated freedom.
Let's weigh Peter's argument. According to him, Nnamdi Kanu, who ordered his followers in the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, which is proscribed as a terror organisation, to kill soldiers and police officers, is more deserving of freedom than K1 de Ultimate, who quarrelled with an airline crew.
Do you now see the type of nation we would be if Peter Obi ever became our President?
As long as you are Igbo like him, he would overlook your wrongdoing, even if it includes murdering our soldiers and cops. The very same people he wants to lead as our Commander-in-Chief. But if you are non-Igbo, he would bring the hammer down on you, even if all you did was disagree vehemently with others.
May God never allow this fellow to get anywhere near Aso Rock!
