I'm writing a piece on biological computing, and would like to include more details on Cortical Labs and their "first code deployable biological computer." This is the same company that recently released a YouTube video purporting to show human brain cells playing Doom. If you know about biocomputing and want to talk about this, please DM me!

This sort of initiative is so desperately needed. A little money with a lot of flexibility can have a disproportionate impact – especially on the high-risk, high-gain approaches.

Announcing "Fast Biology Bounties." I'm giving away $10,000 for ideas to speed up or reduce costs for wet-lab experiments. I'm looking for ideas that are highly original and technically tractable. A couple paragraphs will suffice. Supported by Astera Institute. Details below.

A fun (and mostly coherent!) discussion with Ezra Chapman on the intersection of AI and engineering biology. We live in such exciting times and I hope some of that excitement came across. Thanks Ezra for the invite. #engbio #synbio #ai youtube.com/watch?v=SC4XDE…

I’ve just learned that my forthcoming book ‘On The Future of Species’ (published by Bloomsbury in the UK on 12 February and the MIT Press in the U.S. on 14 April) has been awarded #1 Best Seller in Medical Genetics on Amazon in the UK.

So you sequenced a billion+ bases. That don’t impress me much. Over the last decade, biologists have learned how to generate genome sequences at extraordinary scale. What hasn’t kept pace is figuring out what those genes actually do. Today we infer what a gene by computing similarities, whether by sequence or by structure. Incredibly useful for a first pass but not good enough in most cases to understand or engineer biology. You have to modify the genes and measure the consequences to know what they do. JERBOA is a toolkit to figure out what genes do at scale. We've used it to unlock 43 non-model microbes across 12 different phyla. Molecular assets on @Addgene. Analysis software on @github. There's so much to explore, get out there!!

🫣Something a little different: data-centric approaches to building digital twins as a route to control of emergent population level behaviours! If that means nothing check out the video! Work led by Andrea in colab with di Bernardo group #engbio #control doi.org/10.1098/rsif.2…
