Bit of journalism/writing, bit of wildlife conservation, bit of this bit of that. Hesitant tweeter. Views my own.

Thought I might try spending some time where the weather's better and the skies are clearer. Same handle. Please do follow if you'd care to, and are headed in the same direction.

To those saying comments like "oh good more money for those who contribute nothing" - check ur facts! 40% of UC claimants are the working poor others are carers, have disabilities or illness, & some who don't have work, want it. A little more compassion & less judgement wouldn't hurt.

Just spotted.... this is a good change for benefits recipients, deductions can be soul-destroying. #budget "Caps deductions made through Universal Credit at 15% of the standard allowance. Before this Budget, it was 25%... approximately 1.2 million households will keep more of their Universal Credit payment each month, with households expected to be better off by an average of over £420 a year"

Tamar road bridge opened to traffic #onthisday 1961 although the official opening was not until April 1962. Designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company, it was the longest suspension bridge in UK at the time.

Very sad news - Tony Soper, a huge influence on generations of birders and broadcasters, who I had the huge privilege of working with and getting to know, has died aged 95. The last person who was there at the start of the BBC Natural History Unit. A lovely man.

This elegantly rusting hay tedder in a Perthshire orchard reminded me of @Tim_Hannigan 's lovely piece about the similarly abandoned horse rake in @LittleToller 's Going to Ground collection.

Thank you @miatsf for inviting @CitizensAdvice to today's roundtable on energy support. With millions facing a winter of anxiety about energy bills, it's good to see commitment from all sides to providing meaningful support for people in the greatest need x.com/bbcr4today/sta…
BBC Radio 4 Today@BBCr4today

Dame Clare Moriarty, chief exec of Citizens Advice for England and Wales, tells #R4Today that the government needs to 'recognise the need for targeted support' for people struggling with energy bills, ahead of a meeting with the energy minister and industry leaders later today.
