NaNoWriMo Day 1 update: 1,701 words down on my 50,000-word revision quest. It was a good start! How'd your day go? I’ll be posting story stuff and other nonsense on Threads this month if you’re over there: @chrisbaty/post/CzIdkWELx72/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">threads.net/@chrisbaty/pos…

The Bear Season 2 was great. Felt like they took a hard pivot from Uncut Gems (S1) to Ted Lasso (S2) and I'm here for it.

@jcolman @figma @Adobe Ah nooooo. Our great events team added UX Writer/Content Designer to the list of occupations last year. Let me see what I can find out.

...what you don't know yet is I started the novel the day after delivery, and finished it that day because I could not put it down. My response is in my email drafts, waiting for six weeks to pass so you can see it... because that's my rule. Clear eyes, full heart, can't lose.

@D0xunt Thank you for sharing this. Totally makes my day. (And how magical are deadlines?)

@chrisbaty A long time ago, I had been laid off of my Silicon Valley tech job and wondered what I should do so with myself. It was then that I read your inspiring words and wrote a novel. It felt good. Writing makes me feel good and you gave me the magic of a deadline. Thanks.

Friends, I just completed a novel draft I’ve been working on for many (many many many) years. I wanted to share one new thing I did to get this draft over the finish line. 🧵

@chrisbaty Chris. Congratulations! Wowee! A monumental achievement. You're an inspiration (as well as inspirational). I've been working on the same novel since your Stanford 2017 class. I'm going to find someone to hold my feet to the fire too. Congrats!!

So. To anyone whose novel feels hopeless: Well, mine did too. And it may again! But I take comfort from the fact that normal people finish novels all the time. I know this to be true because I saw a stack of finished novels in a bookstore window once. They were beautiful.

Whatever you do, get yourself some toothy deadlines. Ones that help you prioritize art-making in the face of all the boring stuff we have to do as adults. Terrifying deadlines got me through NaNoWriMo every year. I'm realizing now I also need them for my revisions.
