I’ve noticed a team has started using the phrase “we’re all adults here.” It comes up whenever expectations are mentioned. Today someone said it right after I clarified a policy. The room went quiet. I asked what they meant by it. They said it means they don’t need to be reminded how to behave. I said reminders aren’t about behavior, they’re about consistency. They said consistency doesn’t require supervision. That felt like a philosophical disagreement. I reminded them that alignment still needs facilitation. They nodded, but not in a way that suggested agreement. I'm literally shaking right now.
