TW RANT‼️ Can I please talk about how tone deaf Western players of Love and Deepspace can be? Not all of them, of course, but it’s something I’ve definitely noticed. I may not be East Asian, but I am South Asian, Indian by ethnicity and Canadian by nationality and I can’t help but see a kind of superiority complex in parts of the Western fandom. As an Asian myself, I think many of us understand that our cultures are often fetishized at some point, yet at the same time, the very cultures they originate from are dismissed or misunderstood in modern Western spaces. I genuinely can’t imagine a scenario where an Indian developed game, deeply rooted in Indian culture, mythology, and philosophy, becomes globally popular, gets localized into English, and then English speaking players respond with things like, “Ew, what is this? This is their culture?” or “How was I supposed to know that? I only speak English.” Are you not hearing yourselves? That kind of reaction would spark obvious immediate backlash, if not outright boycotts onto the English version of the said game. You’re telling me you can’t do a quick Google search for a game you’re actively playing? A game that isn’t made by a Western company and doesn’t center Western ideologies? No matter how “European” some of the myths in the game may appear on the surface, they’re still deeply rooted in influences from Buddhism, Chinese mythology, and Daoist philosophy. We all have access to the internet if we’re able to play the game, doing a bit of research isn’t that hard. So yeah, I can’t help but feel like parts of this fandom carry an unspoken sense of superiority. You speak English, great. Do you want a cookie? An award perhaps? “I speak English, how was I supposed to know?” Is the worst defence you can have in any argument. An English version of any non western developed game, is a weaker version of the original work. Love and Deepspace’s main demographic and source of income is predominantly Asia for a reason. Why do you think otome games remain playable in Asia but go EOS for the rest?
