"When we teach a kid to park, we say, 'Cut the wheel right'--we give instructions. When it comes to being kind, we say, 'be a good person.' We assume kids know what that means, but being kind also involves learning skills." edutopia.org/article/bullyi… (As I told @tatertutt- @edutopia

Yes, students need rules, but even more so, they need routines, boundaries, high expectations, and responsibilities. The first doesn't require relationships, just enforcement, but the rest depend on a strong relationship to be effective.

Physical activity develops the executive function area of the brain responsible for focus, on task behavior and self regulation of emotions. How many students could benefit from more recess, play, and physical activity? All of them! Adults too!

What are your child’s Core Assets-her strongest positive qualities, character traits & signature talents that can help her thrive? Core Assets are those that you actually recognize in your child—not strengths you hope she possesses or those you see in yourself.

Schools may think they want me to present on “bullying,” but after we talk, they get why that’s too narrow. To change kids’ behavior, we 1st need to normalize social churn, demystify popularity, operationalize kindness, help them assume good intent, & ID when & why they’re mean.

Teacher job satisfaction hits 50 year low. This is not just post pandemic fallout, but rather decades worth of discontent in an outdated system. Time to make real changes to how we “do” school. #schoolreform edweek.org/teaching-learn…
