𝗞𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗸'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝟴𝗺𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮. It appears it's happening and for those who have been on this journey since it's announcement. Take note that Kodak is also introducing a new film format with this camera coined Super 8mm Extended which comes out to a 1.5:1 apsect ratio, 14:9 will likely catch on. It's wider and slightly taller than "the old" Super 8mm, same perf to frame distance.
In practice, it is slightly wider than traditional Super 8mm, making it easier and less wasteful for wider screen standard aspect ratios to be extracted while giving you a bit of head and foot room for reframing.
In terms of the horizontal field of view, this new S8X format is about a 1.99X crop from Super 16mm and 3.95X crop from Super 35mm, making it a bit easier on the mind.
I have added support for this format in my PHFX | tools to assist with lens selection and planning your shoots.
Current Super 8mm films are Vision 3 50D and 500T, Ektachrome 100D Reversal, and TRI-X (200 ASA). The camera supports frame rates of 18, 24, 25, and 36 fps. 30fps proper hasn't ever been a real standard, but that would have been nice to see here. Their Crystal Sync sound occurs with 24 and 25 fps only. I like 50D here as its the highest resolving current stock, with the only downside being speed/light sensitivity.
Interchangeable lenses with C-Mount and it comes with a 6mm prime, nets about a 24mm equivalent hFOV on Super 35mm, 34mm on 135 still film or more modernly referred to as FF35.
Personal thoughts, and maybe Kodak reads this. I wouldn't mind Kodak releasing 250D in 8mm cartridge form and perhaps taking this strategy and new camera mindset to Super 16mm. But this new 8mm will be a fun camera to use and at 3.15lbs, easy to work with.
