@Monticello360 A bitter sweet gift perhaps. When Jefferson arrived in Paris he joined the prestigious Salons des Échecs but was beaten very quickly in his first game and never played there again, according to his granddaughter.

@Monticello360 Largely by English manufacturers like Dollands who operated as an opticians up to 2011. Nice.

@cja_bates A Japanese rider was on a horse called Jefferson (the same horse?) in the eventing, and won bronze.
English

@LucyRigby Good to see the UVa cap. Jefferson would be proud. Go Cavaliers!

@CapitolHistory @Boston1775 Glad to see this Liverpool made English creamware jug for the 1790 US census celebration. Hard to unbecome British in the realm of mass produced ceramics and other crafts. 🤔🇬🇧🇺🇸

English

#OTD in 1790, the 1st Census began. The #Constitution mandates a decennial Census to count the #USA's population to determine Congressional representation. Thus, it is “not only a headcount of our nation,” its director has argued, but “a #history of the people of this country.”

@artist_reynolds A tremendous portrait of an amazing character. Notable of course for her relationship with Banastre Tarleton, the hound who nearly caught Jefferson at Monticello in 1781. Nice.

At the Dulwich Picture Gallery and thinking of @ICJSMonticello alum Xavier Salomon and TJ in front of Reynolds’ Mrs Siddons who Jefferson saw on stage whilst in London 1786. Nice.

English

@FrankCogliano Seems odd but the description sounds exactly like a certain Edinburgh professor I know. Oh dear TJF. 🤔
