@Monticello360 A bitter sweet gift perhaps. When Jefferson arrived in Paris he joined the prestigious Salons des Échecs but was beaten very quickly in his first game and never played there again, according to his granddaughter.

Jefferson's French chess set, owned by The Thomas Jefferson Foundation but not currently displayed, is thought to have been a gift from the French court.

Reading a fine essay by Peter Onuf on American exceptionalism which will shape and support my thesis argument about Jefferson’s relationship with England. Always good to find nuggets amidst the digging. Nice.

Worried that the British rider in the final of the Olympic showjumping is on a horse called Jefferson. Seems a recipe for disaster to me. 😕

#OTD in 1790, the 1st Census began. The #Constitution mandates a decennial Census to count the #USA's population to determine Congressional representation. Thus, it is “not only a headcount of our nation,” its director has argued, but “a #history of the people of this country.”

@artist_reynolds A tremendous portrait of an amazing character. Notable of course for her relationship with Banastre Tarleton, the hound who nearly caught Jefferson at Monticello in 1781. Nice.

Good to see that Disraeli shared Jefferson’s taste in Scottish myth poetry. A copy every Anglicised gentleman should have in his library.

Slightly disappointing Olympic opening ceremony to be honest. Couldn’t spot the Hotel des Salm or the Jefferson statue by the Seine in the coverage. Missed opportunity I’d say. Otherwise, bien faire Paris! 🤔

Good to see Jefferson had the French Olympic mascot Phrygian cap of liberty in the top right corner of his 1786 portrait. 🤔
