About to depart for the day. But here is an imperfect analogy to the Massie-Khanna statute on releasing the raw investigatory files: It is like the proverbial sausage factory. The documents give you an insight into how a federal criminal investigation vacuum's up MASSIVE amounts of raw info, and then sifts through this a huge volume of stuff that includes irrelevant material in order to first find unverified information that at least appears meaningful. That unverified info then shifts into a process of "Ok, let's see if this is actually true" by looking for corroborating info, or conflicting info that might uncover missing context or reveal nothing more dramatic that incorrect assumptions or conclusions -- or mistakes in recollection, etc. Whatever passes that verification process begins to take shape as reliable evidence upon which decisions can be made going forward. But like the sausage factory, all through this process the useless parts and waste pile up like garbage intended for the sewage as it is trimmed away drops on the floor to be cleaned up later. Discarded or disproven info remains in the files, but it does not advance into the compartment of "useful evidence." What the Massie-Khanna statute did is require the DOJ sausage factory to let the public inside while the bile, garbage, innards, and crap still covers the floor, and then standby and watch as the public is allowed to just eat all they want. The public then goes outside and craps and vomits all over the streets, points at its own excrement, and says "See, we knew it all along!!!!"

Basic privacy statutes, due process, and simple decency demand that dead celebrities, distant acquaintances, and random staffers not be dragged into the public sewer for clicks. But Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna couldn’t tolerate that. They needed the rush.
