If the Maharashtra Government is able to clear encroachments on a mass scale and replace that with public infrastructure - then probably this is the one time when Mumbai can actually at least dream of being Shanghai.

Tree plantation work has finally begun along sections of the open spaces created as part of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, with activity currently underway in pockets of Worli and similar work expected to start soon at Breach Candy. Civic officials said soil testing and land preparation are presently being carried out to assess which tree species can sustainably survive on the reclaimed land along the Arabian Sea. A pre-monsoon target has been set of planting around 15,000 trees, while the broader landscaping plan for the project envisages nearly 60,000 trees and over two lakh shrubs in phases over the next couple of years.

The BMC *Consultant Appointment Matrix:* *A Siphoning of Public Funds?* *©️Shrikant Soman* The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing significant political backlash over its escalating reliance on external consultants for civic projects, leading to the stalling of several appointment proposals by the Standing Committee. **Key Highlights & Political Backlash** * **Financial Concerns:** Critics and opposition leaders have questioned the ballooning costs associated with hiring private consultants, arguing that crores of rupees are being diverted away from direct civic welfare. * **Bureaucratic Overlap:** Concerns have been raised regarding why external agencies are being hired for tasks that fall under the primary domain of the BMC's own well-compensated engineering and administrative staff. * **Policy Stalled:** In response to the growing friction, the Standing Committee has put a brake on multiple proposals, demanding greater accountability and clearer justification for these expenditures. **Leadership and Governance: Ganesh Khankar** Amidst this intense administrative and political friction, Ganesh Khankar has emerged as a standout, constructive voice. Rather than engaging in mere partisan obstruction, Khankar has taken a highly principled and responsible stance focused strictly on public accountability and institutional integrity. * **Advocate for Public Funds:** Khankar has consistently championed fiscal discipline, ensuring that public money is utilized efficiently and that consultant fees do not unnecessarily drain the municipal treasury. * **Strengthening Municipal Governance:** By demanding transparency and rigorous evaluation before approving external appointments, he is actively protecting the credibility of the BMC's internal administrative structure. * **Balanced Governance:** His approach highlights a commitment to robust scrutiny, ensuring that civic development is driven by genuine public interest and long-term utility rather than hasty administrative outsourcing. —— indianexpress.com/article/cities… —— loksatta.com/mumbai/mumbai-… @GaneshKhankar @mybmcWardRN

Last week, I joined surveyors on Mumbai’s first tree census in eight years to see how the mammoth exercise is unfolding on the ground. With 64 surveyors fanning out across the city and a target of documenting 120 trees a day, the teams moved swiftly from one tree to another — measuring the height, girth and canopy of a mango tree with precision. A measuring tape was wrapped carefully around the trunk, but only after the tree cleared the BMC’s eligibility test: a minimum girth of three centimetres at chest height or a height of at least 2.5 metres. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/di…

While #Mumbai celebrating @WesternRly railway reclaiming it's land at #BandraEast that was illegally occupied by slum dwellers, why is slums on BMC & Govt land being spared. Maybe the Real Estate bonanza thru the SRA scheme. Meanwhile enjoy the Slum view from Govandi to Mankhurd on @Central_Railway Harbor line.

The government has taken down our iconic website - cockroachjantaparty.org. 10 Lakh cockroaches had signed up on our website has members. 6 Lakh cockroaches had signed a petition to demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. Why is the government so scared of cockroaches? But this dictatorial behaviour is opening the eyes of India's youth. Our only crime is we were demanding a better future for ourselves. But you can't get rid of us that easily. We’re working on a new home right now. Cockroaches never die. 🪳

For generations of Breach Candy residents, the erstwhile Tata Gardens along Bhulabhai Desai Road (Warden road)was more than just an open space — it was a neighbourhood landmark. But a large part of the garden disappeared to make way for the Amarsons interchange of the Coastal Road project. Now, the neighbourhood is mounting a determined push to reclaim not only Tata Gardens, but also the smaller Signature Garden that once offered residents a rare green breather amid the dense urban sprawl. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/fr…
