If you read one thing today, please make it this - @RSylvesterTimes’s devastating exposé of the NHS’s institutional tolerance of truly disgusting levels of sexual harassment. I applaud the immense courage of Ms A, Ms E, Ms G & Ms H. thetimes.com/article/b2aa0f…

It’s moving to hear people with difficult health problems reflecting on the preciousness of ‘the things that seemed so ordinary at the time’. It’s such an important lesson for us all isnt it- to appreciate the ordinary moments, to really notice them, amidst the busyness of life.

The most important reason to treat people well is not what you'll get in return. It's who you hope to become. Kindness is not about reciprocity or karma. It's about character. Civility doesn't need to be justified with consequences. Respecting others is the right thing to do.

*Nobody* can or should be surprised by the data in the @gmcuk survey It took long enough to get the data on bullying, harassment, discrimination & burnout to be taken vaguely seriously To be clear, the culture in healthcare is not safe The regulator knows it. The Colleges know it. @NHSE_WTE know it. Myself and others have been telling them, showing them and proving it to them for over a decade Change is happening, but it’s slow and hits barriers that need not exist And much is performative, and will lead to further harm #medtwitter

We are glad to see the emphasis on mental health and strengthening the #NHS in the King's Speech this week. Protecting safe spaces for staff, like Schwartz Rounds, is crucial for creating more compassionate services for patients and care providers. #MentalHealth #KingSpeech

@StN_Freda Never stop reflecting Freda, keep looking up & out. Things come full circle - when I qualified I remember thanking our patients during the presentation. And this week my time as a registered nurse has come to an end. Take the baton, enjoy your career x

As my training comes to an end, I'd like to reflect and pay tribute to my greatest teachers: my patients. Their lessons, patience and support have been invaluable and will continue to inspire me as I move forward as a registered nurse. A 🧵. (1/4)

I often think about how we just dont really know what people are dealing with behind the scenes- with family & home life, maybe health worries. This includes senior/'leader' people too. We obvsly dont need to know all the details, but it matters to remember we're all just people.

This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we want to acknowledge the importance of emotional support for mental health professionals. There is an emotional cost of caring that can lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, secondary trauma and compromised patient care.

I hear so many examples of trust breaking down in healthcare. We need to recognise this & face how important this is. We're not just 'delivering' widgets of treatment, our relationships matter hugely- listening, being open, doing what we say, & being honest about what's going on.

@charlie_psych Interesting to reflect, having just left a “system” Charlie. It’s almost about re-energising intent (for relationships/communication) on a daily basis. I’m thinking about the huddles/meetings where we talk about the “doing” of the day ahead, but rarely about the “being”…..

We dont need more 'evidence' for the importance of relationships, listening & belonging. We all know it If we want a more relational culture how can we prioritise & BE these things as often as possible, & notice how we get pulled away into mindless performance, doing, busyness?

The ingredients for a meaningful dialogue are there in all our values, beliefs, experiences, fears, hopes. The challenge lies in how openly we each feel able to share them, & in the quality of the space in which we keep on listening even when that feels really difficult to do.

Lots of reflection as I head into my last week at work, so many memories of those I’ve met along the way. Treat people well, they really matter.
