Finally someone, ofc it’s Brad, has written the thread to debunk myth of the “petrodollar”, which hasn’t been a thing for years. With oil price down and expenses way up, Saudi Arabia has been running a deficit and issuing debt to invest in the US. That’s why when geopolitical analysts like “Prof Jiang” refer to the “petrodollar” being a key factor in the Iran conflict and US intervention in the Middle East I roll my eyes and realize he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Brad Setser@Brad_Setser

Petrodollars! Nothing produces more heated discussion and, in my experience, less insight. Myths trump facts, because the actual data is a bit obscure -- But here is the most important thing to know. Before the Hormuz crisis, the flow of petrodollars had more or less dried up 1/many

@stevehou @SKmacro @dg1001 these are an interesting topic for me always, cus am homeless and have no attachment really, even to dubai, which i love, my attachment is limited so it is really interesting when entire groups of people have that attachment and how it can justify completely irrational actions

@CL207 @SKmacro @dg1001 as in that's really what *I* expect. I don't study this so I could very well be totally wrong. This is also not my preferred outcome. I don't support reunification. I think it'll be an expensive and acrimonious experience for both regardless. Just not worth the cost.

Imo Xi actually a moderate when it comes to IR. Certainly much more so than his economic policies. Just look at how China has handled its relationships with the so called rogue nations. He’s not necessarily a moderate on Taiwan which is different than his position towards the US. Xi considers Taiwan a core interest for China (sovereignty, civilizational dignity, and geopolitical security) and an ultimately transnational interest for the US. If Xi could ship TSMC and the related semiconductor industry to the US in exchange for the US to allow China to peacefully swallow Taiwan he’d do it in a heartbeat. On the flip side, would the US be willing to fight a kinetic war with China over Taiwan’s freedom if the Taiwanese semiconductor industry wasn’t part of the consideration?

it seems obvious from iran war that even the most powerful nations can not perfectly defend missiles and drones, nor could iran anti air (helped by RU/CN) strike material kills on western air force attacks is the best defense, concerning to learn for future world instability

@d_gilz btw a detonation is very different from an explosion

@d_gilz very few people will ever witness a true detonation only possible by high explosives and nuclear bombs the initial explosion actually travels at roughly at least 6-7km per second, or 25,000 km/h you're either dead, or witness the beauty from afar
