On the 13th of May 1787 the First Fleet left Portsmouth, the first fleet of transported convicts headed for Australia, thus beginning the history of British Australia. This was an impressively-organised voyage, costing the lives of one marine and 24 convicts, an incredibly low number in the history of colonialism, for a destination almost as far away as any in that history and an achievement not always attained by subsequent convict fleets. For this triumph, much of the glory must go to Arthur Phillip, whose conscientious leadership makes him one of the great figures of British Empire history.
