We want to boost the UK’s industries of the future. We advocate for policies that prevent high-carbon imports undercutting fledgling low-carbon industries.

LAUNCHED TODAY! Our research finds that a UK carbon border adjustment mechanism (#cbam) could boost construction orders of UK-made lower-carbon steel by £500m/year. This would give a market signal to the private sector to invest in UK low-carbon industry: cleantrade.org.uk/our-research/u…

Read all about it! We have a letter in today's @FT. We make the case for policies to prevent the UK’s net zero transition being undermined by high-carbon imports from places with less stringent climate laws. We risk undercutting low-carbon products. ft.com/content/24488c… (£)

80% of the UK's imported emissions (carbon emissions created abroad for products consumed in the UK) are created in countries with less stringent domestic climate actions / targets. That's from the first analysis we've published: cleantrade.org.uk/why-cleantrade #CBAM #climateclub

@aarongoater It would be great to have a chat about what policies we might see around imported emissions. Our DMs are open!

For now, it’s time for a few weeks off before I start a new role (I’ll tweet later!). I’ll still be keenly following the Committee. Particularly on imported (consumption) emissions, for which the UK has less clear ambition, but which make up 43% of the UK’s emissions footprint.

We're hiring a freelance emissions expert. Have you published research in consumption, embodied, imported or supply chain emissions? Do you want to work on reviewing our research to identify opportunities for the UK govt. to reduce imported emissions? cleantrade.org.uk/hiring/importe…

...and support low-carbon industries in the UK and abroad, which can currently be undercut by imports from places with fewer climate regulations. We're a new not-for-profit and will present the case for taking action to UK politicians in the coming months.

Hello Twitter! We’re going to call on the UK government to reduce the carbon emissions produced outside the UK in the supply chains of products and services imported to the UK. This would incentivise global supply chains to cut emissions, saving money in the process...
