@egi_nupe That last paragraph captures it perfectly. We all know the lines but pretend like it's not there.

The court decides that. However, every sane person with a functioning common sense and brain knows what is defamatory or not. There is no where in the world it is okay to pronounce someone’s child dead for any reason whatsoever, when you know it’s not true. The fact that some people got away with it does not mean that you or others will. Moreso, ranting about how bad things are is totally different from what is on issue here. Ultimately, we all know the lines we shouldn’t cross, yet we are pretending until we learn the hard way.

You can talk about Tinubu now and get 2 years in jail just because you are ranting about how bad things are Who decides what is defamatory and what isn’t

@nang_namoos @BlehisBack It's annoying seeing adults defending it. For real. It's like walking into their street or workplace and seeing their obituary posted. Knowing they didn't do anything to deserve such, won't they fight?

@cloud_target @BlehisBack I feel like if something is not done to the people defaming too alot of them will take it up as a way to misbehave. So I feel it goes both ways

Not the little B 💕✨
This is it. I’m wary of where criminalizing defamation could lead. But in a country like this, I understand the need to go all the way in punishing those reckless banger boys. No sympathy for those silly cretins‼️ Still, the concern is real. It can be stretched beyond its original intent. So it’s not straightforward. On one hand, it can feel like the most efficient way to deliver justice to victims and deter others from acting stupid. On the other, it opens the door to overreach. Both things can be true at the same time.
Moe@Mochievous

I’ll say this carefully. And it may come as a surprise considering my own publicly documented context. I am against criminal defamation in principle. But in Nigeria, where courts are slow and misinformation is so harmful, the debate isn’t simple.

@Obeyamark Have you considered the child mental health? Before you say she's a baby, the parents are the legal protector and guardian and can go any legal length to protect any form of harm from coming to her.

@Obeyamark Do you understand law is about facts and evidences presented in the court? If you can prove your coke is elubo, u'll walk. If the prosecutor proved that your elubo is coke, u'll go jail. u're blaming the ruling, not the boy that declared someone daughter dead when he's not the doc

Bob Risky got sentenced to jail for an offence the Okoya boy committed. But apparently, the law was just fine and Bob Risky was the idiot who deserved punishment.

@egi_nupe I think most of these people don't have the slightest idea what the court process is all about. The way they compare apples and oranges.

One of the most fascinating accounts here is Olumide Capital @olumidecapital - He tweets regularly but on only one subject (finance) - He has only one picture (his profile picture) - He doesn't engage in extensive back and forth or arguments or epistles - He doesn't do threads. Not even "read more" - He responds to a few comments, but usually one one lines - His tweets get into Dragging Side of Twitter once in a blue moon, but he doesn't bother with any shalaye or follow-up. He just moves on. Next stock tweet 😀.
