Brief thoughts on Sunak. 1) Genuinely moving and heartening to see the first British Asian prime minister. No caveat or sarcasm whatsoever. He'll go down in history for that alone and he deserves to.

@KarlreMarks If we are a football club its Leeds circa 2004, gambled everything on a mirage of global growth, now selling off the silver to pay off the debts as we gradually slide into the 3rd tier of nations. Which means we have 8 years of Ken Bates first before foreign buyers show up.

If the UK were a football club it would be in relegation territory now. We need a foreign buyer.

@theasnow This is really useful, thank you. Can be hard to switch from extractive conversation approach (what do I need to get out of this?) to an adaptive one. To me this highlights its less about the style you adopt, rather how you foreground the needs of the other person in choosing one

@nmcinroy 100% this. This is a natural outcome of a system that rewards self-centred politicians who game the process to rise up the ranks far beyond their level of competence, credibility or integrity. That element is not a single party or single administration issue, it is endemic

Uk democracy is on its knees. A general election won't sort it, unless election debate has constitutional and parliamentary reform at the centre. We won't get progressive policies to address range of crises unless UK democracy is fundamentally reformed- root and branch.

Our Minimum Service Levels Bill will ensure transport services cannot completely shut down during strikes. We’re keeping Britain moving and making sure that hard-working people can get to work, earn their living and grow the economy.

@theasnow Its interesting, environment is a big factor. I moved from London to rural Spain. People in my town work (and play) long hours but would never reply "busy" to that question. They would say how they feel on an emotional level. Theres an emotional defensiveness when we say "busy"

Every time someone asks, “how are you?” and someone replies, “busy”, I flinch. Why we have created an environment for ourselves which requires this pace - this level of intensity - is confusing. What would it take to allow ourselves to slow down? To stop valorising “busyness”?

Happy birthday to Eileen Sheridan, who is 99 today. Joining Coventry Cycling Club in 1944, Eileen went on to break just about every distance record there is, including setting the new London-Edinburgh record of 20h 11m 35s. The time was set in 1954 and is yet to be broken.

Did you know it takes 1kg of wild fish, anchovies, mackerel, sardines etc to produce 1kg of farmed salmon? Yes, they catch wild fish and feed it to farmed salmon.

@saila @ImmyKaur Very weird, had this in mind after responding to a comment about the fetishizing of disruption. Feel like we need to develop a more balanced understanding of the complementary/conflicting and shifting roles of creation, maintenance and destruction in a healthy society

This article has been highly recommended to me by an incredibly broad set of people — and having finally read it, I’ll add my voice to the chorus: This is an essay that will deeply inform, for the better, your approach to making, buying, doing, and living buff.ly/3SuYJjv

@Five10Twelve Definitely, interesting analogues for culture too, focus on creative disruption vs cultural maintenance/caretaking in places, tendency towards infrastucture/institutions for consistent funding but fetishism of 'new' for project funding.

Thinking our next webinar talk should be on Disrupting #Disruption. Taking in the #UberFiles, #Netflix shifting to an advertising model and now Liz Truss tweeting that what people really want is stability. Is the age of fetishising disruption finally over? Any takers?

Many pundits misunderstand the jobs most at risk from robots: this paper shows it is middle managers. High & low skilled employment INCREASES with more general purpose robots, but 🤖 don’t need supervision & a lot of managers suddenly become unnecessary. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
