'The handover briefing I was getting was what I felt was a genuinely dismissive attitude to his vetting clearance. The focus was on getting him to Washington quickly' Sir Olly Robbins is giving evidence to Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on Mandelson's appointment.

Some news. I have a short Penguin special (just 25,000 words) coming out as part of a @LowyInstitute paper series on April 28. It's called Inflection Point: Biden, Trump, and the Future World Order. It's partly a memoir with reflections on my time in the Biden administration and partly an analysis of Trump's second term. The key argument is that there are now two America's: 1) an internationalism that focuses on a post-neoliberal global economy, strategic competition and tech, and 2) an America First movement that builds on Trump's second term. These two Americas will compete for the foreseeable future but never destroy the other. The world will need to hedge against this volatile fluctuation. Pre-order here. Just $6.99 for the Kindle version and $10 for the paperback. penguin.com.au/books/inflecti…

Bingo.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Sir Robin Butler, a former cabinet secretary, says that Starmer put Olly Robbins in an 'impossible' position by announcing Lord Mandelson's appointment as ambassador before security vetting had been conducted He told @TimesRadio: 'The vetting process is highly confidential because it goes into all sorts of personal matters 'If he had told the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary of the adverse security advice, they would have had to consider revoking the appointments on the grounds that it was a security risk 'Well, just consider what damage that would have done to Peter Mandelson and to the security vetting process 'The problem was that the decision to appoint Peter Mandelson and the announcement and the clearance with the King had all taken place in advance of the vetting before knowing what the vetting procedure would throw out'

FWIW: -As neighbor & friend, naturally Munir would have close ties w/intel folks in Iran. Doesn’t seem like a revelation. -Unclear why US should see his Iran intel ties as a “red flag.” If anything, US now sees this as an asset, given Pak’s mediation role. foxnews.com/world/trumps-f…

China and Russia are incapable of competing with the projection of American power, writes Michael Beckley. The result is a “one-sphere world” dominated by the United States. foreignaffairs.com/united-states/…

There was unspoken rule in Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave—whenever the IMF came to town, Islamabad would get the bailout. Always. Even if there was no compliance with the last package. You can’t not bailout a country with nukes. economist.com/finance-and-ec…

Arming Ukraine to defend itself against an illegal, unprovoked invasion by a rival power is a much better in investment than trying to flatten Iran without achieving any identifiable strategic objective.

The argument that continuing to arm Ukraine would be a drain on the resources of the United States does not stack up once you consider the sheer number of munitions expended in Trump’s war-of-choice against Iran.
Daniel Fried@AmbDanFried

Yes, Europe should do more to support Ukraine (& it already is). And the USG should stop acting as if support for Ukraine is a drain without benefit. Such support advances US interests by weakening an adversary at another's hands. Ukraine is now also a security provider in the Gulf. Good investment. politico.eu/article/pentag…

Sydney is one of the great cities. People seem at ease, free, healthy, attractive, confident, open. There’s a freshness & energy which has gone missing in Europe & the US. It’s what America thinks it is but isn’t any longer.

EXCLUSIVE @TheAtlantic On multiple occasions Patel’s security detail had difficulty waking him because he was seemingly intoxicated, according to info supplied to DOJ and White House officials. A request for “breaching equipment”was made because Patel had been unreachable behind locked doors. theatlantic.com/politics/2026/…
