A TREATISE: I was practicing on the range next to a friend yesterday. Very, very good player. After chatting a few minutes, he started hitting my persimmon driver. He’s asked if I really liked the old stuff better than modern equipment. I thought for a second. Then said, “Yes.” I went on to tell him about the PGAO and how it’s turning into a more substantial event than I expected (pleasant surprise!). He asked another question which surprised me. “What do you want to do with that?” I’ve been thinking about it ever since and here’s what I’ve realized: Golf never appealed to me as a career. Out of high school, I thought it did. I started a Professional Golf Mgmt program at FSU and quickly came to the realization that selling merchandise in golf shops all day was not the path for me. But I did/do love golf. So how can I participate in the game in way that energizes me and drives me to stay involved in a meaningful way? I believe we can make a difference by making a statement with the equipment we play. We don’t have to concede to $700 AI-generated drivers. And we don’t have to concede to 8000 yard courses. We do not have to accept that the only legitimate future of the game is bigger, faster, longer, louder, and more expensive. We will just play the game the way we see fit. And we can show people that it’s just as fun—certainly more rewarding —than what the modern game has become. That is what I want to do with it. Not preserve old equipment as a museum piece. Not indulge nostalgia for its own sake. But prove that this version of the game still lives. AND IS SUPERIOR. If you can join us, join us.

Its possible that somehow the 97 Masters isn’t appreciated enough. Tiger Woods used a steel shafted driver and a balata golf ball and yet overpowered Augusta and the field. He hit short irons into the par 4’s. Mid irons into the par 5’s. He went driver-8 iron into the 550 yard 2nd hole. He wins by 12. He literally played a different game from the entire field. All while swinging smooth and naturally. He would then change his swing and win the Grand Slam. And yet, somehow one can wonder how his career goes if he never drastically changes this swing. Would love to know the results of that alternate timeline.
