Welp, I ruptured my patellar tendon.. And, with that, today will be the first Sunday in nearly 7 years I won’t be running hills. It happened in a split second, a totally freak accident Wednesday night. In a blink, my life changed. I went from being highly active all the time, to unable to do even the most basic of things without assistance. And in that moment, I felt every emotion; shock, fear, anger, sadness, frustration, “why”… Being someone who doesn’t take days off, Who doesn’t let anything stop me, I suddenly felt helpless. But that helplessness, quickly turned to an abundance of gratitude. Gratitude for my incredible wife who immediately snapped into action and was ready to move heaven and earth to make sure I’d be okay. And has taken our vows “for better or worse” to the extreme, tending to my every need ever since. Gratitude for family and friends who were instantly making calls to get me in with a top surgeon, find the best PT, and sending me precise nutrition and supplementation protocols to begin the healing process. Gratitude knowing for as bad as this is, if I’d landed differently it could’ve been a whole lot worse. And amazement for the power of relationships. Within minutes of texting one of the world’s best surgeons, he called me and proceeded to rearrange his schedule to get me in for surgery the very next day. We’d previously worked closely together, but I hadn’t spoken to him in 10 years. Yet, in one of my darkest hours he dropped everything to personally see to it that I’d be okay. Those initial feelings of anger, sadness, and asking how could this have happened, were ones I needed to let myself feel. So, I gave myself 24 hours to feel sorry for myself and then it was time to move forward. I don’t know why such a freak thing happened to me, but I can’t change it now. Every adversity brings with it lessons to be learned, and so I’ve turned my attention to how it is I’m meant to grow. And, how I will come out of this even stronger. I’m not naive, I’ve been through an ACL rehab before — that was really f*cking hard. This will be even harder. I know I won’t feel like being positive every day. In fact, most days are gonna suck. But it’s an opportunity for me to practice what I preach and strengthen my mindset. It’s an opportunity to grow even closer with my wife and all those who have been there for me when I need them the most. And hopefully, it’s an opportunity for me to help and inspire others who might face similar setbacks. So, today I won’t run hills. And my workout streak of 1,551 consecutive days will have to start back at 1. I’m pissed off.. But, this will not stop me. When adversity hits you can run from it, or you can run to it. It’s a choice we all have. I choose to keep showing up. To become more determined, to exercise more discipline than ever before. Because, that’s just who I am. I’m not in the business of feeling sorry for myself. I’m the type of person who does hard things. I’m the type of person who doesn’t make excuses. And I’m the type of person who will come out of this even stronger. How do I know? Because, I’ve built a lifetime of evidence. And just like this rehab, It all started one day at a time…
