DAD.PRG - making BombBloke

This is what I'm building right now and I'm super-proud of how it's coming together. Not sure how well it comes over in the video but I've really put effort into making everything feel just right.

I’ve found them similarly useless. Tbh the minute you hear an Indian accent on a call centre call you know you’re going to have a bad time.

This makes me unreasonably happy. Just such a gloriously silly sight, and I love it.

Thinking a bit about what I want to achieve with making games, and I think one of the most fun things I can do is to take old games I enjoyed and try to do new and interesting things with them that would have been possible on the original hardware. BombBloke started out as a very by the book what if Bomb Uzal was on the Amstrad but the process of making it has led to experiments and taken it in a really interesting direction, to me at least. Sure it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and I’m not daft enough to expect to get rich doing this but if I can have fun in my little niche then that’s plenty for me.

@randomcodingdud It's my weakness too since I'm primarily a coder rather than an artist. I can design but that's not the same thing. In the end it's trial and error and having taste to understand what looks good, and hopefully, eventually, it comes out right.

@code_wizard_uk This is the biggest hurdle for me to get over - replacing the assets i don't own. the programming part is easy. (relatively) creating graphics that are going to create the same look at feel...urg. I'm finished.

Not much to work with here when trying to customize.

@DanRamo07555230 @WallStreetApes Good man. And a good solid alternative is something like Plex. Just a little old Raspberry Pi sitting in a cupboard with a couple of fat drives attached, it does its thing, sorted.

@WallStreetApes I still have Laserdiscs that I play to this day and they still look and sound as sharp as any DVD and clean as heck. Same for my old DVD's and Blurays. I have VHS as well but those are a mixed bag, as far as quality now.

Genuinely insane track, a true test of skill. My scariest on track moment was in a Caterham R300 a few years back at Silverstone coming around Copse at full speed and the thing is you can’t see shit around the corner and the car had a big fucking wobble, needed a change of underwear after that.

A curious thing about AI is that it gives better results to developers who know what they’re doing, almost as if the skills in understanding composition of software beyond code monkey stuff actually mean something. Combine that with the agency the leftist whingebags lack (for you would not be left wing if you had any belief in your own talents or any desire to use them), and an understanding of the product you wish to create and who it’s for, and you can get shit done. I’m a dev with 25 years experience, I’ve run businesses, built great products, so of course I can do it, without AI. But the speed boost of AI takes projects that you’d previously file under “that’s going to take too fucking long” into “I can build that quickly enough to get it to market in an acceptable time frame and make some money” territory. So yes I’m using AI to assist my code, though I’m not using it for graphics (plain old Aseprite for me) and definitely not for audio where I’m writing code on an Amstrad CPC464 to generate the sounds. Hope that clears a few things up, though I suspect those who whine won’t have the reading comprehension to understand any of that. Maybe I’ll get it translated into Pidgin.
