ABOUT THE AUTHOR: After graduating from Holy Cross College, I got a part-time sports writing job at the Daily Item in Lynn. I spent 15 years at The Item, becoming sports editor at the age of 25 in 1988. When I left in 2000, I was news editor, responsible for all content in the daily paper. I have been at Grant Communications since 2000, while starting my own company – PKH Communications – along the way. Covering horse racing since the mid-1980s, my home track was Suffolk Downs, a venerable racetrack that closed in 2019 when the Massachusetts Gaming Commission foolishly declined to award it a casino license, even though it was by far the most logical choice in the Greater Boston region. I started writing for The Saratoga Special in 2019 and am proud to be on the staff of a paper that we humbly think covers the racing at Saratoga like no others. On August 27, 2022, The Special managing editor Tom Law assigned me to cover the Forego Stakes, which was won by Cody’s Wish, an 8-1 longshot. After the race, Sean Clancy, co-owner of The Special with his brother, Joe, told me, “There’s a story behind that horse. You should look into it.” That led to a phone interview with Kelly Dorman, who told me about his son, Cody, for whom Cody’s Wish was named. Kelly was generous with his time and information, sharing personal details with a writer he had never met. The longer he talked, the more compelling the story became. In January 2023 I approached Kelly and his wife, Leslie with the idea for a book that told the story of Cody as well as the champion horse named for him.
