[San Francisco voters who approved drug screening for cash welfare] "are reacting, I would argue, inappropriately" and "coming up with things to do something so it seems like they're acting". Margo Kushel of @ucsfbhhi

The bad news is homelessness is at an all time high. The good news? As we saw during the pandemic, with action from Congress, the admin, & local communities, homelessness is solvable and preventable. My latest op-ed via ⁦@MSNBC⁩: msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-…

This is not to say the work is easy or we have all the answers. We still need new ideas, especially those driven by people with lived experience of homelessness. But let's stop feigning helplessness in the face of an issue we know how to address.

Now is the time to decide if we are willing to take the work to prevent and end homelessness seriously, or if we are willing, as a collective, to allow this source of national shame to continue.

The homelessness response system is inherently reliant on the success of our country's other safety net programs. Without successful investments in people before they become homeless, it won't matter (for the numbers) how many people we are able to house each year.

The question is no longer "how" to end homelessness, but "if" we are willing to do so.

The solutions to homelessness are clear, well-researched, and proven time and time again. Housing with services, eviction prevention, increasing access to affordable housing, etc. are all tools to ending the crisis of homelessness in our country.

There are so many lessons from this report, but our national experts on homelessness agree that this makes it clear how much progress we can make to prevent and end homelessness when we have the resources and political will to do so. nlihc.org/news/nlihc-nae…

The 2023 PIT Count confirms what so many have warned us about: the end of pandemic-era investments in housing and homelessness that stemmed the growth of homelessness between 2020-2023 has led to an increase in homelessness once again. huduser.gov/portal/dataset…
