🚨 Some people panic the moment they see flashing lights. They start explaining themselves, apologizing, and giving away info they never had to share in the first place. But as soon as questions come back at them, everything changes. Knowing your rights and staying calm in these situations is something most people were never taught—and that lack of knowledge is exactly what the system counts on. 💡 Learning how these encounters really work and how to protect yourself legally is key to staying safe. ⚖️👮‍♂️

🚨 BREAKING: President Trump just ENDED UK PM Keir Starmer's whole career in the Oval Office *Turns around*: "I'm DISAPPOINTED. You see that man right there? Know who that is? The late, great WINSTON CHURCHILL." "Unfortunately, Keir Starmer is NOT Winston Churchill." 🔥🔥

📍 At his post-Cabinet press conference in the Beehive on Monday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon delivered yet another masterclass in saying almost nothing — and somehow made it worse with every answer. Asked the most basic question — whether the United States and Israel’s unilateral strikes on Iran breached international law — Luxon’s answer was effectively: “not our problem.” “Issues of legality [are] for Israel and the US to talk to,” he said, adding New Zealand hadn’t seen the intelligence, had no guarantee it ever would, and would not be asking to see it. Asked whether MFAT had advised him on the legality of the US and Israeli strikes, he retreated behind “Cabinet rules”, refusing to give a straight answer. That is an extraordinary position for a country that has long prided itself on championing the rules-based international order. The argument here isn’t whether Iran’s regime is brutal. It is. Nor is it whether Tehran’s nuclear ambitions are destabilising. They are. The question is whether powerful nations like the United States get to launch military strikes without UN Security Council approval, without clear evidence of an imminent threat — and expect quiet acquiescence from smaller states like NZ. On that point, former Prime Minister Helen Clark weighed in over the weekend, sharing a statement from The Elders — an independent group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007 — which read: “The military strikes by the USA and Israel against Iran violate international law and threaten regional and global security… The Iranian Government’s systematic denial of human rights and its brutal suppression of protests are indefensible and must be condemned without reservation. Yet history shows that wars aimed at regime change deliver neither democracy nor stability.” That is a coherent position: condemn the regime, defend human rights, but uphold international law. Predictably, critics attempted to recast Clark’s comments as support for Tehran. It was a distortion. Defending international law is not defending the Iranian regime — it is defending the principle that power alone should not determine legitimacy. Luxon, by contrast, appeared unable to hold those ideas together. He mixed up Israel and Iran mid-answer. He claimed New Zealand had long supported “any actions” to stop nuclear weapons and terrorism — but when asked to clarify what “any actions” actually meant, he descended into circular answers and visible frustration. Pressed on whether he could make a judgment call on reports — including from the BBC — that more than 150 schoolchildren had been killed in a bombing, Luxon responded that New Zealand wanted civilians protected and actions consistent with international law, but that it was “for them to explain.” WOW. Meanwhile, Labour leader Chris Hipkins offered a blunt “no” to supporting the strikes, arguing that condemning Iran does not justify “ripping up the international rule book”. That distinction — between moral disgust and legal justification for force — appears lost on the Prime Minister. Luxon’s rejoinder — “What is disgraceful is a regime that kills its own people” — is true but beside the point. No one is defending Tehran’s brutality. The issue is whether New Zealand, a small state reliant on international norms, is prepared to look the other way when major powers sidestep them. What Monday’s performance revealed wasn’t strategic subtlety, but a Prime Minister who hadn’t done the homework. Faced with complex questions about the lawful use of force, Luxon defaulted to platitudes and deference to Washington. For a Prime Minister increasingly tilting toward the US orbit, that may feel politically safe. But it looks far more like a leader who is completely out of his depth — and being found out. Below is a snapshot from 1News senior political correspondent Maiki Sherman’s report, capturing some of the worst moments of Luxon stumbling his way through Monday’s press conference. #nzpol
