If you’re new here I should warn you, I am bound to disappoint you eventually. I’ll try to be less cranky but I’m a little old and it seems to be getting worse. Hopefully I will not offend your sensibilities.

For 100 years, they have stood watch, for names we will never know. In 1921, an unknown American soldier was laid to rest at Arlington, chosen to represent every service member lost without identification. At first, the tomb wasn’t guarded. Visitors came and went freely, sometimes treating it more like a destination than a sacred place. That changed on March 24, 1926. Concerned by the lack of respect, Army leadership ordered a permanent military guard. And for a century since, the soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment—The Old Guard—have carried that responsibility. Through rain and snow. Day and night. 365 days a year. Under strict conditions. They are precise, intentional, and unwavering. Because this isn’t just a tomb. It’s a promise: that those who gave everything, even without a name, will never be forgotten. Happy Birthday to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. Thank you for your dedication for the last 100 years.

I generally prefer soda from a fountain in a cup with ice through a straw. I just drank a can of Fresca. It was straight 🔥 I’m thinking I might have to get a case.

Driving up Big Cottonwood Canyon, hand out the window, sunshine on my face and good music reminds me of driving on Highway 1. Planned to hike but the road is closed. So, exploring a bit and taking a moment for a quick walk to Hidden Falls! I LOVE the sound of rushing water...and sometimes plans don't work out, and it's somehow better that way. 🤍

Sister missionaries found my father in law after Vietnam, hardened and living for the world. They taught him, and they never got to see his baptism. Later, he did get baptized. The Church did not erase his humanity or fix every flaw, but it changed the direction of his life. It led him to an incredible wife, and together they raised five kids. That legacy now includes 4 temple marriages, many grandchildren married in the temple, more than 10 returned missionaries, and a son serving as a bishop. These stories can be found all over and are awesome to reflect on. You never know what impact you can have.

@Manhattva Neither Don Jr. nor Eric could ever do this. I wonder though if Baron could someday. He’s a completely different man. He seems to have mastered some of the skills already. What will he say when he’s ready to speak?

@Here_s_Hoping Many years ago I went to work for The Home Depot. I didn’t know enough. I quickly learned that the professionals shopping there were quick to teach me what they know. Sharing skills really is the natural way most people live. Look around for someone who knows and ask for help.

Learning new skills is one of the best ways to become more self-sufficient. It’s a principle long taught by the Church, and one I was fortunate to grow up with. I was raised by parents who lived it. This was frequently recited in our home: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” My dad taught me how to frame, hang and patch drywall, wire an outlet, demo a space, and lay tile. I wasn’t allowed to get my DL until I could change a tire by myself and could jump start an engine by myself. He taught me how to repair and build sprinkler systems. We dug a root cellar together. He’s a nurseryman and he taught me all about trees and shrubs, how to identify them, care for them and where to (and where not to) plant them. We poured cement, laid pavers and repaired and maintained bicycles. My mom taught me how to reupholster furniture, paint the house, cook, and sew. They didn’t just teach skills, they taught capability. I chose my career intentionally. I watched the nurses in my family care for the sick and the injured and I knew I wanted to do the same. Self-sufficiency isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about becoming someone who can be relied on by yourself, and by others. Learn new skills. It takes time, effort, and failures before a skill set is mastered. IMO learning by doing is the best way. In my experience, talking to people who excel at a skill you want to develop is a great place to start. In my experience those who are true masters are more than happy to help you learn.

I’ve read the CES Letter, watched the ex‑Mormon TikToks, seen the YouTube ‘tell‑alls.’ Yet I stayed. Not because I’m ignorant, but because I’ve also read the Book of Mormon, kept the commandments & my Temple covenants and watched God actually change me & my family for the best

@jmillincook This reminds me of the time my BIL sent his window cleaner to my mothers home prepaid to clean her windows. He called her to let her know. By the time said window cleaner arrived she was just finishing up her own windows. Eighty years old. You must fight it. 👊
