Eve of Palm Sunday 2023

Today @helloiamrob and I completed Section 1 of the Southend Ring from Westcliff station to Belfairs Wood. A really agreeable, varied walk and the perfect Spring day to do it on.

It did culminate in a walk up the fire-scarred Addington Hill to one of the best and most comprehensive views of London.

Section 4(A) today from Hayes to Coombe Lane. A grey affair with no shortage of hills but it ends with a ride on a tram so who am I to complain? #LondonLoop

I also went shopping for walking boots yesterday with @helloiamrob. We’ve finished the Capital Ring so we’re now moving a concentric circle out to do the London LOOP.

My train into London is taking the most bonkers route today, going via Dagenham Dock then Stratford then the Bow Curve to Gas Factory Junction and into Fenchurch Street.

And you might think I wouldn’t include Finsbury Square in that but I absolutely do. Dreary as all hell.

The neighbourhood around Finsbury Square, a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street is one of the most criminally dreary and unloved parts of the whole city.

And there were mosaics and wall paintings in situ so you could stand in someone’s house on the exact same surface they stood on 2,200 years ago.

I went to Solunto today. A Greco-Roman town that was abandoned in the C2 BC and it was incredible. The first time I’ve experienced antiquity like this and, I won’t lie, it makes some ancient sites in Britain look a bit lacklustre.
