@ZacGoodman_ @sam_contorno “Most athletes go to college and get weaker” and “they often run slower and get hurt more frequently” is a dangerous way to frame the importance of relative strength. Misrepresents collegiate S&C and anecdotal at best. Implies that good S&C are few and far between in collegiate.

Most athletes go to college and get weaker… Not in an absolute sense, but a relative sense. They grow in mass, but let their relative strength ratios deteriorate. It’s the reason they often run slower and get hurt more frequently.

@Coachgriffin88 What qualifies as being a great S&C coach? We can’t even answer this question. If it’s based on experiences, exercise science is irrelevant in training. If we actually want to push the field forward there has to be a better qualifier than “they know what they’re talking about”

How big of a role do you think life experience/age plays in being a great S&C coach? I don’t know if you can be a great coach in your 20’s. You can be a really good coach in your 20’s, but you don’t have the life experience of older coaches & the learnings that come from that.

@WSWayland Great question. Probably somewhat, but to me, at least, it’s really that great internship experiences are few and far between. S&C Coach doesn’t get paid more to raise the next gen, and talented coaches in college/post-grad simply can’t afford to work unpaid as often anymore.

I’m meeting a lot of young S&C coaches who don’t possess basic progressions or regressions around lifts or plyometrics. Additionally their ability to communicate in group settings seems compromised. Is this the lockdown effect appearing in the coaching profession?
