The truth about early sobriety that nobody has told you: I had a lot of “Week Ones” before it finally stuck. And they all sucked. Sleep — Your brain will wake you up every hour, screaming that something’s wrong with you. You’ll sweat through your sheets more than once. That would make it better… but it won’t… but maybe it will… but it won’t… but maybe I can…” Anger — You’ll experience irrational anger about anything, along with anxiety and a flood of emotions. You’ll wonder, “Why me? Why this? What did I do to deserve this?” Eventually, you’ll stop feeling sorry for yourself, emotions will start to normalize, and life will begin feeling normal again—but probably not in week one. You’ll look terrible. The “sober glow” doesn’t happen in week one. Your skin will break out like a teenager’s and produce oils you never knew you had. Your body is detoxing, and your liver is processing decades of backlog—your skin is helping with the detox. Everything is coming out through your pores, and you look rough. You look worse than when you were drinking. It feels unfair. The promise is that the glow comes… later. Not yet. Another promise is that you’ll eat healthier and lose weight. But first, you’re going to eat everything in the house. You’ll gain some weight (but not a ton). This also feels unfair, but you quit poison—your reward isn’t a looser waistband right away. Sugar and carbs hit the same reward pathways as alcohol. Your brain knows it and is chasing that dopamine hit anywhere it can find it. The diet-and-fitness obsession starts later. Right now, week one is survival mode, and ice cream and sweets are your friends. If you’re in the first couple of weeks, reading this at 3 a.m. because you can’t sleep, feeling angry about everything and wondering what’s wrong with you—the answer is: nothing is wrong with you. You’re not doing it wrong. This is what the first few weeks look like for almost everyone. It’s rough, it’s powerful, and it’s confusing. It takes time. But you will get stronger—deeper, steadier, more whole—and that strength will keep showing up for you, long after these 3 a.m. nights fade. And yes—it’s worth it.

@NUCLRGOLF I enjoy walking courses that are designed to be walked. Most courses today are set up for cart play especially in western Pa where there is no flat ground to be found. Do what you enjoy most.
