@L0m3z I remember being in grad school when Toby Keith died. I was in class when other students heard the news and began making fun of him and his songs - many of them foreign students. He wasn’t even a political figure, they just enjoy seeing us die.

A major tipping point for me was in early 2016, at a party with some fellow faculty, all of them on the left, some self-identifying communists, who I was friends with and who knew nothing of my politics, and who spent the evening very casually and gleefully celebrating the death of Antonin Scalia. I had thought that we mostly disagreed about policy, how to best use government resources, the proper interpretation of the constitution and such. I realized this was a category error. At bottom these people were motivated by a ravenous, barely concealed bloodlust begging for an opportunity to express itself, and that if my politics were better known, I would be its eventual target. Some who are nominally on the left are only so because of social considerations. Most people's politics are not deeply held. Most people couldn't actually tell you why they believe the things they claim to believe. This is important to remember. But for those who do believe, for those animated by this bloodlust––and there is no mistaking it when you see it––there is no debating them out of this. There is no compromise to be made with that underlying appetite for death and destruction. You can only crush it. Suffocate it. Stamp it out.

@LandsharkRides My construction friends have a joke about it being old school electrical shock therapy. The electrical shocks are constantly switching them back and forth between gay and straight, it is a struggle for them.

Apocalyptic atmosphere outside. A thick layer of haze has enveloped the area. Smells like burning plastic. A twinge of pain with every breath. No sign of life, no sound of birds, not even a breeze of wind. It is a harbinger of doom.
