Good morning, and welcome to our weekly stakeholders and public sensitization engagement. This week, our focus is on Tribunals, running from 10.00am to 2.00pm every day. You'll get to interface with the processes in the Tribunals and how to access them. Most notably, ask questions, bring feedback and comments. Let's engage! This chat is spearheaded by the Office of Registrar Tribunals and the Judiciary's Directorate of Public Affairs and Communication (DPAC).

Who do we serve? Tribunals serve a wide range of people including; ordinary citizens, businesses, investors, professionals, students, communities, and government agencies. Where do Tribunals get their Authority From? Article 159(1) of the Constitution provides that Judicial Authority vests in and is to be exercised by courts and Tribunals .

What are Tribunals? Tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies established by different Acts of Parliament to handle sector specific disputes. This means that they are subordinate courts with judicial functions comprised of sector experts but the proceedings do not follow strict rules of procedure like the traditional court settings. Tribunals, also referred by various statutes as Boards or Committees, serve as avenues for addressing disputes. Why are Tribunals Important? Tribunals are part of Kenya’s justice system, offering specialized forums where disputes are resolved in a faster, affordable, more accessible, simpler procedures and less formal manner than courts. Tribunals are designed to ease the burden on mainstream courts. By focusing on specific areas, Tribunals are equipped with the expertise to handle matters that require a deeper understanding of sector-specific issues. This specialization allows them to deliver practical, fair, and sector responsive informed decisions that truly reflect the complexities of each case. Tribunals also play a key role in promoting economic growth by protecting investments, and providing a stable environment for businesses and individuals to thrive. With a set turnaround time of less than 180 days from the date of filing to conclusion, Tribunals offer an efficient and effective as compared to the court system.
