We have a new paper out on how to use rocks to pull #CO2 out of the air and stabilize it as...rocks. TL;DR: Surface rocks in Japan could remove 7.6 Gt-CO2/y at 1.5 GJ/t-CO2. It's open access, so send it to your mother. I know I did. A thread. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…

@AndreasenJack Sigh. If only there was enough high purity iron ore needed for DRI to replace BFs. Also, the "H2 DRI" plants being built are actually only "H2 ready"...they will run on NG or a mix. I wonder if "uncompetitive" includes letting virgin ironmaking move overseas to dirtier producers.

We can see this effect most clearly in iron and steel "CCS is a temporary solution for iron and steel production. As adoption of the direct reduction of iron steelmaking process grows, it may displace blast and basic oxygen furnaces for markets demanding higher quality steel"

Article now out, led by Wolfram Buss: "Applying minerals to soil to draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide through synergistic organic and inorganic pathways." We discuss synergies btw. enhanced weathering, biochar, and secondary minerals to increase SOC. nature.com/articles/s4324…

The @energy 2024 carbon management strategy dropped last Friday, and it's very good History of carbon management, current CCS facilities, priority use cases, policy implementation, cluster strategy and more Let's look at some of the hits👇👇 energy.gov/sites/default/…

to people worried about looking like boring nerds: 1. you are boring nerd, hence your profession 2. you will look like a boring nerd in anything bc that's you 3. if you are cool, then you will still look cool in these clothes. see Glenn O'Brien, Duncan Hannah, Basquiat, etc.

Many interesting posters, @coreyamyers always gets me very excited. Strong improvements on his suggestions on direct air mineralisation. Look at the potential for one single deposit...

🚨Megathread alert. The 3rd Int conference on Negative Emissions is kicked off today. Massively oversubscribed, every seat filled and hundreds that didn't get a ticket. Very exited to be here. Will be live tweeting my observations in this thread. #negativeco2conference

Can't tell you how many times I've heard the myth "CCS doesn't work" What they really mean is CCS is hard, in part due to: Hard-tech development cycles Long-term policy support Success determination A recent @FECMgov paper debunks that myth and explains the challenges🧵

Sine and cosine are so 1804. By using a POD to identify an orthogonal basis tailored to your physics problem, you can solve PDEs faster. Check out our latest article in CMAME! authors.elsevier.com/c/1j5f2AQEJ58AU

@k9 @drvolts Mined CaCO3 gets calcined to CaO and mixed with cooking coal and the iron ore to form pellets.

@drvolts @coreyamyers No, slag is what’s left over when you pull the iron out of iron ore. You’ll have to deal with it here too. And IIRC, traditional blast furnaces use limestone as a “flux” to help separate the slag from the iron. Not sure whether that’s mined or produced artificially…

@drvolts As you noted, lots of slag gets used in concrete as a SCC (both industries claim this against their emissions). Only blast furnace slag can be used this way (steelmaking slag composition doesn't allow it). So, if Boston Metals slag is different composition, it's important. (fin)

@drvolts If they use traditional flux, are they sourcing zero CO2 lime? For reference, ~10% of iron and steels CO2 comes from the CaO produced from calcining CaCO3 (sciencedirect.com/science/articl…). This remains for H2 steelmaking, so if Boston Metals is different, it's a big deal. (2/n)

climate advocates are sharing a story about this plant's "failure to capture 90% of emissions" what's missing? 1) EPA permits are just for~1/4 of its emissions 2) emissions high b/c there's a 335MW coal plant on site; the current CO2 capture is on the ethanol fermentation part
