Very happy to share our latest article, published today in Joule. Our thesis in a tweet: CO2 separation is (relatively) easy, and it's OK to operate CO2 electrolyzers at low-to-moderate single pass CO2 conversions to maximize their performance. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Australians are quietly patriotic, and why wouldn't you be? - Compulsory preferential voting. - Watching the cricket on free to air TV. - A quality, ad-free ABC. Today we can add: - A social media ban on under-16s. Sensible policy in the face of megalithic corporate interests.

Read our CCS review in ACS Chemical Reviews to learn: - Why modern packings have pressure drop 10x lower than Sherwood predicted. - How molecular structure influences the performance of CCS solvents. And much more! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

Very happy to share our latest perspective in @NatChemEng 'Accelerating climate technologies through the science of scale-up.' We discuss tools academics and engineers can use to accelerate the scaling of new technologies. Read it here: rdcu.be/d30IM

@eric_lang It's an incredible place right now. The science community have all moved there. I just hope it's sustainable.

I would never shame or scold a creator who won't/can't leave twitter for whatever reason. Instead, encouragement: on the other site (the blue one), I have 1/10th the followers as on twitter And engagement (likes, RTs, etc) per post are *higher* than here.

@KevinClimate @scawen1 @GeorgeMonbiot A few concrete benefits: - Rather than just a 'for you' and 'following' feed, there are curated feeds on your topic. 'EnergySky', 'GreenSky' and 'BookSky', for example. - The 'Starter Packs' link you into a community (e.g. Decarbonisation experts) quickly. Low entry barrier.

I agree with @GeorgeMonbiot here - other than referring to it as X. In my view it remains ‘twitter’ & ‘tweets’. It’s nicely embedded in our language & I’m disinterested when some bloke unilaterally decides to rename our established platform after a single letter.
George Monbiot@GeorgeMonbiot

1. Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of staying on this platform. Pro: We were here long before Musk took it over. We built this. Con: He has used our creation to help elect a far-right autocrat, and build his own grim political career. 🧵

@JonahMessinger @JesseJenkins @dan_kammen @howarth_cornell @rff His paper w/ Jacobsen on Green & Blue H2 is the single-worst analysis of a CCS process I have seen. It's clear they didn't understand how a CCS process works, and didn't ask anyone who did. When the inevitable rebuttal paper came, they doubled down. At least they didn't sue...

@JesseJenkins @dan_kammen @howarth_cornell @rff I really don’t understand maintaining respect for Howarth’s LCA work after he willfully ignored my critiques, especially his normalizing to thermal energy units while purporting to compare emissions for electric power production between coal & LNG (which the media ran with).

I have tremendous respect for @dan_kammen @howarth_cornell & other signatories of this letter. However the quoted text below is a factually incorrect statement: @RFF analysis of oil & gas leasing provisions and my analysis of LNG exports both explicitly focus on global impacts, including accounting for trade and market dynamics (both supply and demand elasticity responses and substitution dynamics in domestic and international markets) and lifecycle emissions.

@KevinClimate @AndrewOlUndy1 @autofac @KevinClimate Fair enough! Would *love* to see full LCA standards enforced. In my view, CCS wouldn't be a distraction in the energy space if it were legislated, funded and built (again, the tech is TRL9). But if LNG facilities are built on the promise of CCS funding one day...

@DrThomasMoore @AndrewOlUndy1 @autofac Many of my tweets expressly point to CCS for cement process emissions & potentially some steel production:
Kevin Anderson@KevinClimate

@mikehinford @AndrewOlUndy1 @autofac CCS on cement process emissions (along with clinker changes &improved design). On energy I see it as a hugely detrimental distraction. Could establish v.strict (Paris-complaint) full life cycle emission standards, then if the oil/gas sector think CCS can meet them, let them try.

A measured interview on the UK Govt's CCS investment plans by Prof. McMullin @autofac . Well worth a listen, & all credit to the journalist/programme for giving Barry the time to explain the issues clearly & carefully. Ps. I disagree on the Icelandic offsetting option:)

@KevinClimate @AndrewOlUndy1 @autofac Regarding strategic delay, I tend to think that other green tech. is far more culpable. Rather than tightening our belts and putting on CCS *today* (something we could legislate today for $$$) we instead dawdle and hope magic solutions emerge from low TRL technologies.

@KevinClimate @AndrewOlUndy1 @autofac CCS won't be most effective for everything, but for a subset of technologies (especially, e.g., heavy industry) it it is very likely necessary. If we had a technology-neutral price incentive, this would play out. (And I'd love to be proven wrong if other tech undercuts it!)

@janrosenow This is mostly true. But in the petrochemicals sector, you have the opposite problem: it's relatively easy to turn fossil fuels into chemicals, but it takes a lot more energy to make chemicals from other feedstocks (esp. CO2).

The primary energy fallacy is the idea that all primary energy from fossil fuels must be replaced with an equivalent amount of clean energy. BUT: This is not necessary because conversion losses do not need to be replaced. More than 2/3 of all primary energy is lost as waste heat. I first heard @MLiebreich use this term which captures this phenomenon nicely I think.
