He was speaking on talkSPORT, when he was asked if Pochettino should stay or go. “Go,” Lalas answered. “I mean, it's not that I want him to leave. I just think that this cycle has run its course. “When it comes to Mauricio Pochettino, you had one job. And it was the game against Belgium. “You win that game, then you're in some rarefied air. And it's not gravy but let's be honest, you're playing against Spain. And you take your chances, you're back in an underdog type of role. “So I think that they [U.S. Soccer] move on. I believe he's had a good time, but you had one job, and you blew it. “And, you know, you live and die by that. Every coach understands that, every manager understands that, and certainly Mauricio Pochettino does.” Pochettino’s $6 million a year contract with U.S Soccer expires this summer. Sure they have. The Netherlands rd16 loss is still cited when talking about Gregg Berhalter. But he was offered an extension. While I’m against multiple cycles, I didn’t think GB deserved to lose that opportunity because of the post-WC ridiculousness. Same would apply to Poch.

@AlexiLalas None of the media let the Netherlands game define Gregg, now Poch gets all the blame. It’s clear you just want another one of the “boys” to coach the team. Where was this accountability 4 years ago? 3 years ago when Gregg was rehired?

@AlexiLalas Yeah, not only that, but just imagine if they then would have beaten Spain. Then imagine if they went on to win the whole tournament. That would have been wonderful! And everyone would love Poch!

You’re right, teams can have a bad day. But that bad day can come to define a coach. Such is the nature of a World Cup. Very fine margins. Coaches know it and accept it. Think of how different the discourse would be if USMNT had beaten Belgium and played Spain yesterday.

@AlexiLalas My pushback would be with any sport, sometimes the players can lay an egg. Someone has to decide if they think Poch can get the team to the next level, if they believe that then they should keep him. There are often failures before triumphs. He did have a short cycle.

If you look at countries where soccer is not the number one sport and the game has to compete with other, more established, sports - the USA is actually leading the way in that cohort.
