I was in Golders Green yesterday. I arrived just as the police presence was building. My heart goes out to the two Jewish victims and to their loved ones. We need to make our Jewish community know we support them. Even before I knew what had happened I was in tears because you could feel panic in the air. These are just regular people getting with their lives. London has always been a great multicultural city. Our Jewish community brings us so much. The media erasure of the third man stabbed yesterday - because he's non-Jewish and so doesn't fit the 'antisemitism' narrative - is becoming harder and harder for them to do as more people are waking up to the obvious fact that this was not an 'antisemitic' attack at all.

Zack Polanski’s intervention is not just misguided – it is frankly disgraceful. Police officers were dealing with a violent attacker armed with a knife, who had just stabbed two people in the street, and was refusing to surrender his weapon. In those moments, their job is to stop the threat and protect the public, and by all accounts that is exactly what they did. For a national political leader to second-guess those officers, amplify unverified claims, and undermine confidence in policing in the immediate aftermath is deeply irresponsible. It sends entirely the wrong signal at a time when the Jewish community, targeted here and in the past few weeks – are looking to the police for protection and reassurance. Polanski should withdraw those comments and apologise. Criticising officers who have just put themselves in harm’s way to stop further bloodshed is not principled politics – it is reckless, and he ought to be ashamed of himself.

I’ve just been interviewing @Keir_Starmer for @BBCr4today who says he met the police officers who tasered the suspect in the Golders Green stabbing “I want everybody just to imagine what it might be like. You're trying to arrest someone who has already attacked two people and has no regard for life. We know that tasers were fired. I know from my own experience with the police, that there are only two shots in a taser, and once you've shot them, there's nothing left. There's a guy on the ground, he's got a rucksack on. And I don't know what was going through the mind of those officers, but if I was there, I'd be thinking, he's going to detonate something. He's going to blow me up and everybody around here. In those circumstances, I think you can quite see why what could have gone through their mind is, we need to do whatever we can to disable this guy." He added: "Now, when I then see Zak Polanski come out and retweet or support a criticism of that, I think it's disgraceful... He's not fit to lead any political party."
