Conversation I just witnessed in the elevator. Two women in their 50’s: (Woman A): “How’s Sarah doing, did she hear back?” (Woman B): “Not so good. She got into Yale, Harvard, and Columbia, but not MIT.” (Woman A): “Oh, I’m sorry. Let her know I’m here if she wants to talk.” (Woman B): “The MIT rejection letter was worded in a way where it basically told her, “you’re stupid.” They’re both silent, mourning the moment. Elevator door opens, woman a walks out. My inner voice: You have completely lost touch with reality and cannot be helped!!!

Are you pushing your kids into uncomfortable situations? My son Alex brought up a moment on our podcast when he almost didn’t get on a flight to Los Angeles. His friend canceled last minute, and he was ready to stay home. I told him to go anyway. Alone. He went. Cross-country, at 17, figured it out, handled the hotel, and built confidence that stayed with him. That’s the job as a parent. You don’t remove discomfort. You use it. He didn’t go for business. He went to a football game. But he came back with something more valuable than the trip. Confidence that he could handle things on his own. Most retail leasing activity today is happening in the 1,000-1,800 SF range. Even drive thru concepts that used to take 2,500 SF are now pushing closer to 1,200 SF. A big driver is cost pressure and a shift in strategy. More locations, smaller footprints, and higher efficiency.
