With #NACFC kicking off tomorrow, some cystic fibrosis trends I’m watching this week and over the next few years: 1. Who is researching aging with CF and where are those resources best deployed? PwCF have higher rates of colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and kidney disease. The time is now to start tackling these questions. 2. Can someone beat Trikafta with a small molecule drug? Is it going to be Vertex? Someone else? No one at all? I continue to believe that for Trikafta-eligible patients, the bar to accept a future gene therapy is extremely high due to baseline efficacy, safety, and patient experience. 3. Are genetic therapies ready for prime time? Can they express in the lung and lead to meaningful clinical improvement for Trikafta-ineligible (or intolerant) patients? 4. Reproductive healthcare for people with CF. Let’s see some outcome information for PwCF who have become parents. 5. Socioeconomic trends: are healthier CF patients doing better in their careers? Are more PwCF going to college? Graduate school? I think yes… but want to see it. 6. When the heck are we going to chance the clinic guidelines. Do healthy CF patients really need to go to the doctor quarterly? 7. Who is solving genetic therapy clinical trial congestion?
