Saw this on my way home. It makes me think about harm reduction—what’s being provided, what the goal is, and what’s actually helping people move forward.

Yesterday I talked with one of the largest sheep ranchers in the great state of Idaho. Pendleton used to buy his wool until last year. Apparently they started using some foreign wool instead. We just bought 12k pounds from him as a sample run and if successful we will be partnering with him going forward. He can offer us up to 80k pounds annually. This is how we win.

A new homeless shelter in Portland’s Pearl District is at the center of a $6 million lawsuit against the city, filed by the owners of a neighboring apartment complex that is also asking for the shelter to permanently close if they continue to lose rent. katu.com/news/local/pea…

@bprintco He quoted by project, a week is almost 10k, that’s one man on mulcher and another on the mini-ex and chipper, about 5 acres of thick poorly managed spruce/pine that was logged 50 years ago and ignored

Hmm.. an acre a day out here is reasonable for a CTL. In Idaho that seems low, but they’re likely just being conservative. Was the quote a daily rate? Don’t accept daily rate quotes on this stuff. Too many ways to get screwed as a customer. If they don’t quote by project, require they add language in the estimate that they will complete your required scope regardless of time for completion.

We’re doing a 35 acre clearing job this month and brought out the Fecon FTX 150-2 dedicated Forestry Mulcher It’s cool, but at 3x the cost and double the fuel consumption, it’s actually faster and more affordable to use two CTLs and pay two operators instead. 20% more power than a Takeuchi TL12 but certainly not 20% more clearing speed

@401Casey Well, they pay someone for services, I don’t know if it’s wholly accurate to say they provide services, lol Portland, OR is by far the worst example I know of exactly that, it’s just taxpayer funded vote buying as far as I can tell

@cpachristopher Spot on, the problem is that increasingly these governments have decided its incumbent on them to provide services above and beyond any other state that should really be provided by the federal government, then it spirals...

As a reformed municipal bond guy two stories have fascinated me the last couple weeks and they are of course very related. Washington state implementing an income tax and the downgrade of New York City

38 states have NO estate tax. Of the 12 who have an estate tax, Oregon already has one of the lowest estate tax exemption levels in the country at $1 million and is now pushing for a 16% rate. Who wants to stay in a state that keeps carving away at people's hard-earned money?

NEW: Mark Hester (.@mhester9777) on the miserable state of Oregon’s economy. “By just about any measure, Oregon is nearing the pain threshold for anyone who isn’t a public employee.” Does our state government even care?

If you think calling the IRS is bad, try dealing with California Me: Hi, I'm calling because my client got an $800 bill from the CA Franchise Tax Board Agent: That's the annual LLC tax. Me: Right but he doesn't live in California. Agent: But his LLC is registered here. Me: By accident. He checked the wrong box on a Legal Zoom form in 2019. Agent: That's still a registration, sir. Me: He's never done business in California. He's never been to California. He lives in Ohio. Agent: But his LLC has been here for six years. Me: His LLC has never been anywhere. It's an LLC. Agent: It's been here since 2019. That's $4,800. Me: For what? Agent: For being registered. Me: It doesn't do anything. Agent: It still applies to passive entities. Me: It's not passive. It has no revenue. Agent: The tax isn't based on revenue. Me: No employees. No assets. No customers. No phone number. Agent: Still $800. Me: It's literally a piece of paper. Agent: A piece of paper registered in the state of California, sir. Me: Ok fine. He wants to dissolve it. Agent: He can absolutely do that. Me: Great. So he dissolves it and we're done? Agent: He'll just need to pay the outstanding balance first. Me: The $4,800? Agent: Plus the current year. So $5,600. Me: He has to pay $5,600 to close something that never opened. Agent: He also needs to file six years of returns. Me: Returns for what? There's nothing to report. Agent: That's fine. They can be zero returns. Me: Six years of returns that say zero on every line. Agent: Correct. Me: And if he doesn't? Agent: Late filing penalties. And he can't do business ever again in California. Me: And that's a deterrent? Agent: Excuse me? Me: Nevermind. So if he ignores it it keeps running forever? Agent: Until it's properly dissolved. Me: What if he dies? Agent: The LLC survives him. Me: The LLC outlives my client? Agent: LLCs don't die, sir. That's one of the benefits. Me: Benefit for Califonia maybe. Agent: Is there anything else I can help you with today? Me: Can I speak with someone about hardship relief? Agent: Of course. That department is located in Sacramento. Me: Ok transfer me. Agent: Hardship teams don't take phone calls. Me: How do I reach them? Agent: You mail a letter to Sacramento and wait 6 to 8 months. Me: And what happens during the 6 to 8 weeks? Agent: Months, sir. Not weeks. The $800 + interest continues to accrue. Me: Brutal. He doesn't have the money. So he can never leave? Agent: But he can check out any time he likes, sir. Me: Don't.
