@GongR1ght Ipl is more about promoting local talent while securing sponsors using big names in intl cricket... ipl is a productive league in both talent & financial aspects, psl on the other hand has only declined & ruined some of the names that we were proud of when they come from u19..

Tim David was a player who barely got any opportunities in BBL but PSL picked him first and brought him to limelight and he turned into a superstar. I have never seen IPL turning a no-name foreign player into a superstar. Scouting system of PSL is much better.

Sahibzada Farhan was Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup but there are certain aspects of his game that merit discussion. Highlighting specific areas does not mean the player is poor or should be dropped. It is simply about assessing performance objectively. Accumulating runs in T20s has never been an issue for Pakistan’s batters. Both Babar and Rizwan were prolific and topped the rankings yet Pakistan reshuffled the top order because they wanted aggression. Farhan has provided that intent but it is still to be tested consistently against stronger opposition. Farhan’s T20I record against SENAI (the top five sides) makes a poor reading: 376 runs in 18 innings at a strike rate of 115. Against lower-ranked teams, he has 929 runs in 27 innings at a strike rate of 147. It is noticeable contrast with a decent sample size. Since 2024, the average balls taken to reach 50 in T20Is are: Australia 27, England 28, India 28, South Africa 29 and New Zealand 29. Pakistan batters on average takes 33 balls to score a fifty, the same as Farhan’s. Milestones are not the priority in T20 cricket, but when they come, they should arrive at the right pace. At times, there appears to be excessive focus on personal landmarks. For instance, against Namibia he scored just three runs off the last three balls before reaching his hundred with a non-aggressive single and he even acknowledged surpassing Virat Kohli’s 319-run mark by fist-bumping Fakhar. Such celebrations seem slightly unnecessary and pursuit of such landmarks can distract you from bigger goals. If we look at the last two matches, Farhan’s fifties came off 32 balls against Sri Lanka and 37 against England, well below the current global benchmark. There is no doubt Farhan is a more powerful hitter than Babar and Rizwan against both pace and spin but his dot-ball percentage (42%) remains among the highest, which affects the level of early momentum he can generate. In a game, read SL vs Pak, where 419 runs were scored in 40 overs, a fifty off 32 balls or a hundred off 59 balls is just about par. It is not a bad innings, but it is unlikely to create a powerful impact. In contrast, Fakhar’s 84 off 42 balls at SR 200.00 was a far more impactful knock. Farhan now is likely to move to No. 2 in the T20I rankings and could even reach the top if results elsewhere go his way. Rankings are celebrated by fans, but elite teams rarely base their strategies on them alone (a mistake Pakistan did before with certain players). That’s why despite being Number 3 in the world, he didn’t make it to the 14 Pakistan players shortlisted for auction of the Hundred. Pakistan have won 29 T20Is in the past year. But that quantity does not make them the best team in the world. Similarly, sheer weight of runs cannot, by itself, define a batter as the best.

Pakistan have tried 29 different players in the last four Men’s T20 World Cups, the most by any Full member side. Yet the debate in Pakistan is always around who shouldn’t be in team and who should be. Pakistan’s biggest problem currently is the lack of clarity on the role of some players. And there are two clear examples. First is Babar Azam. To be clear, Pakistan’s recent loss to India was largely down to poor bowling and a top-order collapse and Babar wasn’t responsible for either. But his selection reflects a broader problem, i.e assigning roles that don’t suit players. Even at his “peak” from 2018 to 2023 in T20s, Babar’s two limitations were strike-rate and hitting against spin. There is no logical or cricketing evidence to suggest that an opener who struggles to accelerate in the Powerplay will suddenly thrive at No. 4 in the middle overs. And if there is any evidence, it is from games against low-ranked and half-strength teams. The second issue is with the bowling unit. Pakistan have stacked their team with all-rounders hoping they might be required for batting or bowling, but you don’t know when. Against India, Pakistan had eight bowling options, yet only three (Shaheen, Abrar and Tariq) were picked primarily for their bowling. One of them bowled just two overs and another was introduced only in the 11th over, suggesting the plan revolved heavily around part-timers. Faheem Ashraf hasn’t bowled a single over in the tournament and bowled just 4 overs in his last eight T20Is and comes to bat at eight which means Pakistan do not trust his bowling and trust his batting just for 2-3 overs even though he is a far better batter than it. When it was decided that Salman Agha would bowl the first over, then it begs a question why Pakistan had three more spin bowling all-rounders (Saim, Shadab, Nawaz)? No matter what the conditions are, India batters have always dominated Pakistan’s spinners. Pakistan put all their eggs in one basket by stacking the team with spinners so when the only genuine pacer, Shaheen, had an off day, Pakistan didn’t have a Plan B and were forced to bowl 18 overs of spin (which no team apart from Pakistan has ever done in T20 World Cups). No team ever used 6 spinners in T20 World Cup either. T20 cricket is constantly evolving. Strategies that once seemed innovative (like stacking the XI with seven or eight bowling options) now appear flawed. Overloading on bowlers can create insecurity among frontline options, who feel they have just an over or two to prove themselves. Pakistan have added batting depth to give their batters’ psychological comfort, but in doing so, they may be overlooking the pressure being placed on their specialist bowlers. Pakistan need to have at least four players in the XI who come in team for their bowling alone and six who justify their presence with batting alone. You can take chance with the 11th player.
