𝐒𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝑅𝑜𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝐼𝑎𝑛 𝐻𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒 I met Bob the day I joined Prestwich Cricket Club. As was the way, I was immediately asked to umpire a Sunday XI fixture. I don’t remember much about the game but enjoyed time at the bar discussing all things sport. That was 58 years ago and from that session we became firm friends and partners in all aspects of PCTBC. I caught Bob’s first wicket for the 1st team against Longsight which was the start of his massive contribution as a player. Bob’s legendary status is based on his overall contribution to the club as a player, coach, captain, umpire, committee member, scorer, statistician, historian, vice-chairman, fixture secretary and President. WOW! We played cricket, football, golf, snooker and, believe it or not, crown green bowls together and our families were all entwined in all aspects of the club. Socially, many Saturday nights were spent together, the main discussion being Bob’s injuries from that day’s sporting fixtures and that is prior to him playing Rugby! Bob came up with the ultimate solution to that issue by producing his own in-house medical team. We were both at the forefront of change which involved the club taking youth development as its priority. Bob started our Under 13 teams and threw himself into coaching, where he excelled. The players and coaches that came through that period are part of the major success of Prestwich Cricket Club. In addition to all that Bob became the secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire League and on to the Lancashire County League. Some would say, and I would agree, that Bob successfully ran both leagues. During that period he was appointed to sit on the Lancashire Cricket Board and after a few years became Chairman. A fantastic achievement for a brilliant administrator. He transformed inter league matches at all levels and continued to manage them through to 2024. A giant of grassroots cricket in Lancashire, he was overjoyed this season when Prestwich reached the Lancs KO final but sadly was unable to attend due to ill health. Just to put into context his contribution to Prestwich, even when poorly he arranged and managed all our fixtures up to and including our final fixture of this season on 29th September and arranged our Junior Presentation that takes place tonight. That tells you everything about the man. Simply the best. Rest in peace pal. Brian.

𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐒 𝐖𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐄𝐑 𝟐 There's been lots of well publicised news around the GMCL over recent weeks regarding problems with player eligibility and the subsequent issuing of points deductions to various clubs. Although our 1XI were already promoted, the upshot of this is that following their win at Glossop this afternoon, James Wharmby's team have now been crowned Champions of Premier 2 for 2024. Congratulations to all the players on a fine season and getting back up at the first time of asking. There'll be no celebrations though as they're all probably tucked up in bed now ahead of tomorrow's early trip to Blackpool for their Lancs KO Final v Ormskirk! • Prestwich 1XI 187-9 (Gibson 64, Wharmby 45); Glossop 1XI 140ao (Bailey 3-46) Back at Heys Road the Seconds enjoyed a quite superb innings from Sam Baldwin as he hit 135 with Dylan Kane's team posting a mammoth 342-6. Sam's knock (highlights below from our new NV Play system) consisted of 19 fours and 3 sixes and came from 107 balls over 140 minutes. Batting mentions too for Dan McCall (46) and Kane (39*) with Adam Cheshire and Alex Bradley scoring in the 20's. Pairs of wickets for Cheshire, Sam Staley and Wilf Reeve helped secure a 140 run win. • Prestwich 2XI 342-6 (Baldwin 135); Werneth 202-8 (Cheshire 2-31, Staley 2-40, Reeve 2-46)

𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐑𝐃𝐒 𝐂𝐔𝐏 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐔𝐌𝐏𝐇 Prestwich 3XI secured the GMCL Sunday Premier Cup following a brilliant 111 run win over Clifton at Heys Road. Matthew Cuthbert top scored for Nick Carter's team with 54 while runs from Thomas Orrell (42) and man of the match Stephen Ritchie (41) helped Prestwich up to 193-9 from their 40 overs. Clifton's reply never really got going as some superb Prestwich bowling and assured fielding brought a steady flow of wickets, the visitors finishing all out for 82 just inside 26 overs. Thanks to all those who came along to support from both clubs. • Prestwich 3XI 193-9 (Cuthbert 54); Clifton 3XI 82ao (West 3-15, Staley 3-17, Ritchie 2-27)

As the curtain begins to fall on another junior cricket season, we need to advise all our members and junior parents that Steve Orrell, our wonderful Junior Academy Director, is retiring after 16 years managing our junior training evenings and coaching camps. We think it is important that you all get the chance, individually, to record your thanks on behalf of the hundreds of children that have benefitted from the quite fantastic sessions that Steve has managed. The club is full of numerous players that have come through our Friday night sessions and indeed gone on to represent Prestwich at all levels. In addition, we will get a chance to celebrate Steve’s unbelievable contribution at the junior presentation on Friday October 4th from 7pm. Thanks for everything, Steve!

𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐖𝐈𝐂𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐒 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 Prestwich 1XI made history this afternoon as they progressed through to the Lancashire Knock Out Final for the first time following a 73 run win over Kendal at Shap Road. Sam Kershaw's unbeaten 70 anchored the Prestwich innings after they were put in to bat by the home side, going on to post 197-7 from their 45 overs. The third over dismissal of Sam Dutton set the tone and once Evan Williams found the hands of Kershaw, only bats 9 and 10 offered any resistance. Kendal finally succumbing in the 36th over as James Wharmby's team booked a final date with Ormskirk, details TBA. • Prestwich 1XI 197-7 (Kershaw 70); Kendal 1XI 124ao (Bailey 4-26) Elsewhere Prestwich 3XI lost by 5 wickets in the last over at Uppermill while Prestwich 4XI enjoyed a comprehensive win over Friends Sporting Club at Heys Road. • Prestwich 3XI 165ao (Sherazi 60); Uppermill 2XI 166-5 (Carter 1-25, Staley 1-27, Lester 1-28, Ritchie 1-29, West 1-41) • Friends SC 2XI 45ao (Shah 4-7); Prestwich 4XI 49-2 (R Hatchett 26*)
