I believe the spectral sensitivity of photopsin is correctly measured and is linear. However, the spiking frequency of the cone cells is not linear with the spectrum. We know that retinal function is not based on cone cell spiking frequency. It is strongly gated by timing signals coming from the hippocampus.

Neuroscience: color perception I've been thinking about this image. It shows the published color sensitivity response curves of the 3 cone cells in the retina. Something is wrong with it. It makes zero sense and it's driving me nuts. 🤪 The response curves of the green (M) and red (L) cones strongly and inexplicably overlap. And yet, I can clearly distinguish the 3 colors as if there was very little or no overlap. Is it just me? I don't think so. I'm beginning to suspect that there is something wrong with the experimental methods used in measuring the spectral sensitivity of cone cells in the lab. Now, I feel compelled to investigate this anomaly further even though it's outside the main focus of my research. I hate it when this happens. 😬😀

@TrueAIHound I wonder. I read some history of color theory from various books last year and if my memory serves me right, the observer was defined before the discovery of process of how spectral sensitivity works with Photopsin. I could be wrong though

@crookiedev I believe there is probably something wrong in the spectral sensitivity of cone cells are measured. My understanding is that the calculated sensitivity is correlated with the spiking frequency of individual cells in vitro. I'm almost certain this is wrong.

@VinciRSS I write all my tools with #raylib + #raygui but they are not as full-featured as Qt6 could be. For example, UI layouts are manually computed. Good parts: very small memory footprint and very performant... and I personally like that retro-pixel-perfect style

Neuroscience bits from my research: The brain learns to perceive everything in the world, whether or not it recognizes them. I call this ability, "extreme perceptual generalization". Recognition is just recollection. I wrote previously: "I research the visual system of the brain. I've come to understand that the most important principle of intelligence is the precise timing of discrete events (spikes)." Imagine you're a forest dweller who has never been contacted by outsiders. You know everything about the forest: trees, flowers, fungi, fruits, insects, animals, streams, ponds, etc. Then one day, while foraging in the forest, you suddenly come across an acoustic guitar leaning against a tree. If your brain worked like a deep neural net, you would be blind to the guitar because it was not in your training data. That would be a bummer. Fortunately, your brain doesn't work like deep learning. In a DNN, perception is recognition. This is why AI requires so much training data. The brain is different. You can instantly and effortlessly perceive anything, even if you have never seen it before. You can see the guitar, its colors, shape, texture, edges, parts, size, position, distance, etc. After the initial shock, you may decide to interact with it, by touching it, grabbing it by the neck, tapping on it, smelling it, etc. My thesis is that, as an infant, we learn to perceive the world around us. The infant's brain quickly gains the ability to instantly build a temporary memory representation of an object or scene on the fly. Representations are built from existing components. This is the basis of generalization. We automatically forget almost everything shortly after perceive them. The only way to remember representations is to recall them repeatedly before they fade away. This strengthens the connections and makes them permanent. Even then, we do not have perfect memory. Most memory traces are eventually written over by new ones. The brain remembers what is unique about objects, that is, what makes one object different from other objects. There is no data compression as in deep learning. This differentiation ability of the brain is orders of magnitude more data-efficient than deep learning. Work in progress.

Through Aufhebung, the old form is overcome, preserved, and lifted into a higher form. The Staat, or state, is the concrete home of Sittlichkeit, ethical life made real in institutions. Then Weltgeist, World Spirit, moves history forward through peoples, states, and world-historical struggle. So staying relevant to the theme here, let’s say Hegel gives you people, spirit, contradiction, state, ethical life, and world history. He does not yet give you activist revolutionary praxis. Then we move to Moses Hess’ 1830s to 1840s. He converts Hegelian development into an activist repair operator. Philosophy must become action in the world. The goal is restored Einheit, unity, or Gemeinwesen, common life, social humanity. Then Marx after Hess. primitive communism → rupture through property/class → alienation → class consciousness → revolutionary praxis → higher communism Marx inherits the repair structure but hardens it into political economy. The original condition is primitive communism, an unconscious communal unity before class society. The rupture comes through Privateigentum, private property, and Klassenverhältnisse, class relations. Alienation becomes Entfremdung, especially alienated labor. Man is alienated from his work, his product, his Gattungswesen, species-being, and other human beings. Then comes Klassenbewusstsein, class consciousness. The proletariat becomes conscious of its historical role. Hess’s Tat becomes Marxian Praxis, practical-transformative action. The repair is revolutionary: the abolition or Aufhebung of private property and class society. The endpoint is higher communism: social humanity restored at a conscious, historical level. Then back to Hess, late phase, Rome and Jerusalem, 1862 Initial Jewish Volksgeist → rupture via Rome, exile, and later diaspora life under Rome’s inheritors → national consciousness-raising → organized return → political-territorial restoration → higher Jewish Volksgeist The BJP is applying this in India.
